This unique harpsichord recital by Trevor Pinnock charts two incredible musical journeys four hundred years apart. Inspired by the travels of Antonio Cabezón, the sixteenth century organist and composer, Pinnocks programme weaves a path not only through Cabezóns life but also through his own enviable career. In celebration of his seventieth birthday, Pinnock has chosen a personal selection of works that evoke vivid memories from different stages of his life. Success in their respective careers led both Pinnock and Cabezón to travel widely; Cabezóns journeys through Europe resulted in meetings with several of the composers included in this program. Journey sees Pinnock perform repertoire spanning two hundred years (encompassing works by Tallis, Byrd, Bull, Sweelinck, Bach, Frescobaldi, Handel and Scarlatti) on his favorite home instrument, a harpsichord made in 1982 after a model by the mid eighteenth-century French builder, Henri Hemsch. Pinnocks own journey has seen him recognized as one of the finest players of his generation, receiving many prizes and international recognition along the way whilst amassing an exceptional discography; his truly is an epic journey. Pinnock is known worldwide as a harpsichordist and conductor who pioneered performance on historical instruments with The English Concert, the orchestra he founded and led for thirty years. In 2006 Pinnock founded the European Brandenburg Ensemble to celebrate his 60th birthday; their recording of Bachs Brandenburg Concertos was awarded a 2008 Gramophone Award. Pinnock is a former artistic director of Canada's National Arts Centre Orchestra and founded The Classical Band in New York. Pinnock has appeared frequently as a guest conductor with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Boston, San Francisco and Detroit symphony orchestras and the LA chamber orchestra.

Mature Pinnock
No more speeding tickets, no more citations for stiff, rigid playing—the pulse is now steady yet subtly flexed, the touch refined, and the use of stagger to soften the rhythmic profile is lovely. The variation sets are impressive, but the Bach truly surprises; this is no longer the Pinnock of the 80's!The Linn engineers captured the sound and ambiance much better than the Archiv engineers. As the other other reviewer wrote, it is indeed a fascinating program.

Programmatic harpsichord music, superbly played, showing the development of the instrument's body of work.
I'm in a quandary about this CD. The recording is excellent (SACD), the performance is fine, and music selection is varied and programmatic in delivery, but there's just an overdose of harpsichord music for most people to listen to in one sitting. I tried to go through this CD from beginning to end several times, but always ended up bouncing around a little, selecting pieces and, after a few, moving on to other CDs. This may be entirely due to my taste, although I do love harpsichord in and of itself: it's just that there's so much of it here! The pieces selected are interesting and show the development of harpsichord music through the years, and from that aspect this is an interesting survey of music and its evolution on this instrument. Some of the pieces are old familiar items, and a few are relatively unheard. Pinnock, of course, is a master of the instrument and that shows clearly. The recording does justice to the instrument, the player, and the music, and comes across really nicely.
