The Honest-to-Goodness Truth

Pulled this book up online when searching for "honesty" for my summer school students. They loved the book so much I had to rush & order a couple of hard copies for them to use at their tables to read, refer to, & write about. Fun, affordable book with a lesson / theme.

I have used this book in multiple schools with kinders through fourth graders both as library story and as an opening for discussions on honesty, friendship and other peoples feelings. Several teachers have even gotten their own copies. The illustrations are interesting, but not the major selling point of this book. It helps even the youngest listener understand kindness, consideration and tact.

Great tool to teach truth telling

I love to read this story to my eight year old at bedtime. The conversations we have about telling the truth, friendships and doing the right thing are priceless. And sometimes we read it just for fun. We have several of McKissack's books and find her brand of storytelling brilliantly engaging, clever and entertaining.

The book is a pretty good way to explain the difference between honesty and brutal honesty and tattle taling. My only real complaint is that there is an odd depiction of a child being spanked. This particular section doesn't add much to the story and could have easily been left out. Including an image and text that includes such a controversial topic that's really unrelated to the overall message of the book may steer some away.

Excellent story to teach how to be honest without hurting others feelings. I plan to use this with my third graders who have a difficult time being honest with kindness.
