Untraceable (+ BD Live) [Blu-ray]

I remember when this movie was out in theaters but was never able to get around to seeing it. I bought it on DVD from Amazon five years ago and finally saw it the other night. I really liked it.Part Saw, part Silence of the Lambs, this movie was a blend of both. Violent and gory and a bit far-fetched but nonetheless it kept me on the edge of my seat. Why a man with his capabilities would go this far I don't know. he had a grievance, you say but I know that if I had a grievance like him I'd have hacked into Wall Street and enriched myself whilst using my newfound wealth to destroy those who hurt my dad in other more legal or semi-legal ways. the guy went too far and gained very little. What real satisfaction was there for him? I loved the location being the Pacific Northwest.Here is Leonard Maltin's take on the film. Formulaic but effective thriller about a computer savvy psycho who devises the ultimate killer app: On his website, he offers down streaming video of captives tormented by torture devices that grow increasingly more painful, and eventually lethal, as voyeurs worldwide click to watch. Not for the squeamish. About as satisfying as a better than average episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Diane Lane is persuasive as the FBI agent on the killer's trail.I wish they would make more movies like this for women to play. They are so rare in Hollywood. I have become very stingy with my five star ratings on films but this one came very close. I must say though how surprised I am at the visceral 1 star ratings. Mankind has always found ways of using new inventions and technology for heinous purposes such as torture and all I can say is wake up realize there are sickos who would do the type of things depicted in this film if they had the knowledge to do so. Just look at the nasty comments people leave on forums and you will begin to realize what I am saying is true.Ok, after the sermon and back to the film. Two things brought this from a level five to a four for me. One was the early reveal of the bad guy, I had really thought it was going to be someone else who ultimately becomes a victim of the sicko techie. The second was the abrupt ending which I will admit gave the appropriate message to all those out there who might consider this type of Internet usage but again, it was abrupt. Overall, a good film to watch and realize there are those type of people out there and the world still does have evil people looking to do others harm.

I have to agree with many about how unrealistic it is that an FBI cyber crime agent is using her own home to track a known crafty cyber killer. I agree also that it goes a bit too far in terms of violence and gore. I should not have watched the scene of the man on the bridge as my own daughter was shot and died (not suicidal). I do think the reason they kept that scene so intense is because that was that this criminal's reason. He was trying to point out the sickening nature of how many people will tune in to such twisted perversion. I know first hand how fascinated people are by mental illness and torture after losing a 2nd daughter. I believe this was an exaggeration of a real life dude named Luka Rocco Magnotta (born Eric Clinton Kirk Newman) who uploaded videos of himself torturing kittens to death, then eventually of himself killing a Chinese International Student Jun Lin AKA Justin Lin (RIP). After which, he committed horrible atrocities and mailed human parts to official's offices in Canada. Side note: He dated that Barbie woman who was addicted to plastic surgery to look like Barbie. This movie isn't terribly far off from the horrors that real life historically holds true. It's heartbreaking. I don't even know why I watch it. I guess to torture myself. It was a fictional documentary. *insert weird face here*

A serial killer who posts live feeds of his crimes on the internet. The more people who watches speeds up the killing of his victims is really bad. If you can tolerate the ways that his victims die, the movie is okay. It's really great when the table is turned on this creep at the end.

True Thriller!!

Cyber crime is serious business. This movie gets the verbiage correct, the methodology correct, the capabilities of the IP correct and exposes how crass the internet can be! Explanations for technology are not given. However, remember the buzz words and you can learn about it with an online search!The internet was originally called DarpaNet, for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Administration. Darpa has the responsibiity of advancing research to aid in the defense of our nation! The results of their work are extensive on the civilian side, so don't put down defense research! The purpose of DarpaNet was to make a Command and Control System, that had no single point of failure, and would allow the US DoD structure to withstand a nuclear attack. DarpaNet met its design goals. We are the benefactors of it. Of course, the WWW was an extension to DarpaNet with the work of HTML and the Browser. This made the Internet what it is today.Untraceable is the tale of one malevolent www emotionally disturbed user's desire to wrought vengeance on his perceived enemies. The movies plot is tight. Some characters are more completely defined that others. However, the tension and terror built through the second act, with a third act that brings a satisfying conclusion to the story arc. Some story lines are left to the imagination, but so what! What movie completes every story line in less that a week. If this were a movie that extended over a week, with relief breaks for exercise of many forms; well I don't think I would last through such a movie! I think I would be asleep after 240 minutes!

A horror film for the internet age, the plot revolves around a deranged killer whose website allows viewers to watch torture and death in real time. The deaths may or may not be random and it is up to the police to solve the case which comes very close to home for the chief investigating officer. On first viewing the film is very engaging but watching it a couple of times more, there were certain aspects that did not, in my opinion, work as well as they should have. I will not go into these as I do not want to give away the plot for those who have not yet seen it. Also I was not very impressed at the ending which I thought lacked imagination and the poetic justice this genre of film requires.The DVD picture is presented in 2.35:1 widescreen and Dolby 5.1 audio. Extras include commentaries and behind the scenes featurettes. Languages and subtitles are English, German and Spanish.
