Unleash Your Creative Monster: A Children's Guide to Writing

My 9 yo loves to write comics and this book is perfect for her. We've been poring through it at bedtime for the last few days and we both love it.It's packed full tips and goes into lots of depth on each topic but remains accessible. I think she'll be reading it for years to come.The illustrations are absolutely wonderful, too and have kept us giggling all weekend.

We’ve bought ‘how to write’ books for the boys before and they can often feel a bit babyish and patronising but this one has the tone just right.It covers some top level things and more in depth writing techniques in a way that is accessible and fun even to children who aren’t natural writers (like our 13yo). The illustrations are brilliant and very funny our 10yo has spent the weekend drawing his own monsters.Overall this book is very fun but also very useful. I Would highly recommend this to any parent or teacher.

I love this book - it will really help me plan writing exercises for schools. It explains complex, ethereal writing concepts like 'voice' beautifully and clearly.

My nine year old says “it’s a brilliant book and it sparks the imagination”, she really enjoyed reading it and loved the pictures! It’s definitely helped her creative writing and her teenage brother even enjoyed reading it. Would very much recommend x

Really great book if you're into story writing. Brought for my 9 year old and its very helpful.

My four year old loves this book, and although it's not aimed at his age he still gets a lot out of it with help. He knows off by heart that stories should, at there most basic, contain, goals, problems and struggles and he uses this in story telling now. He also loves copying the different monsters and his drawing is coming along too as a result. As an adult, I get an awful lot out of this book too.

Lovely ideas and great Illustrations

I borrowed this from my local library but as soon as I read it I had to buy my own copy. Such an amazing comprehensive writing book.A lot of writing books for kids cover the basics very... well... basically. Unleash Your Creative Monster is a cut above the rest.I particularly loved how it covers things like outlining, and writers' block, and rhythm, and story theme. What's your story about? Most books for kids just have the 'this happened then this happened then this happened' way of writing. That might be good for beginners, maybe, but this book assumes that kids are smart and kids who are writing want to write compelling and interesting stories that mean something.And the cartoon style is great and the writing prompts come with some hints and additional questions to tease out ideas on how to start writing the story.My personal pick for book of my year.

This book is great fun and very encouraging for young writers who do not enjoy pointless prescriptive exercises.
