Mastering Advanced English Language (Macmillan Master Series, 40)

Really amazing. I was very apprehensive in buying this but I am so glad that I did. Everything is explained so well, in detail, explained. I am doing A-Level English and was really struggling. Only had it a couple weeks and it have already helped me. Thank you so much!

I 'met' this book a couple of years ago when I was teaching in the U.K. and I said to myself 'I will buy it one day'. And I am still convinced it is really useful and I am happy with my purchase.Apart from describing the constituent elements of the English language thoroughly and in a straightforward way, I think the plus of Thorne's book is when she applies her analytical ability to a vast range of genres providing teachers with the practical tools to recognise the genre features in the examples. The genre analysis section is the real 'meat' of the whole book also in terms of number of pages devoted to it. In conclusion, Thorne has drawn from Linguistics and Genre Analysis and has finally succeeded in training teachers, and learners, to look at genre with those critical eyes we all need to understand what is behind a piece of writing of any kind.
