My preference of pedal - but service every 6 months of so to keep them in good condition
These are great pedals, and of all the MTB clipless pedals I've tried I come back to these as for me the benefits outway the flaws.Starting with the flaws- They do need regular servicing, every 6 months a strip down and regrease (which is easy to do) i've found is necessary when riding through the year in the UK. If you don't the outer bearing can fail, it's a small moving part so if the pedal gets loose it puts more stress on the bearing and the bomb mid ride it breaks and you have a pedal body stuck to your foot and you find yourself using muscles you never new you had to spin the cranks and hold the pedal onto the spindle. (i've never had that happen with Shimano pedals XT, XTR....)But the positives -- the mud clearance is fantastic, as it is for snow and ice, so if you're riding in poor conditions and you have to stop to jump stiles as you clip in the mud or snow is pushed out from the other side (this is the sole reason i came back to Crank brothers pedals, as i found with other pedals the snow just compresses into the pedal making it "impossible" to clip in.- the 2,3,7 versions of these pedals can be easily upgraded to the 11 bearings which provide a bit more longevity as they don't loosen as much, and it comes in around the same price as the rebuild kit, take a look a the crank brothers service kit online and then google the bearing dimensions and away you go. or post a reply to this and i'll drop in the bearing codes.- Servicing is dead easy, it is basically remove end cap and the securing bolt and pop some grease on, it's a 5 minute job, and we should all give those constantly moving parts a bit more TLC than we do.- very easy to clip in and out of.All in all, i've got three sets of crank brothers pedals these and eggbeaters, they're simple and they work. i've only ever broken one bearing and the pedals stand up to a lot of weather and riding abuse.Really recommend them, but only if you can be bothered to service occasionally
