Museum exhibition of Dead Sea Scrolls recommended this
This book was recommended in the teaching materials list provided on the Museum of Science website when the "Dead Sea Scrolls" exhibit was in our city. I couldn't find this at our local library, but it was available on Amazon for a ridiculously low price (less than I pay for a fancy espresso drink!) in library binding, so I just bought it.My nine year old son found a factual error when he read it. This was a few weeks ago, and I didn't note what the error was, but it was something I confirmed at the time, I think relating to whether the person who found the scrolls was alone or with another... It didn't render the entire book useless by any stretch, but he was very turned off by the mistake, and, based upon our other sources, it WAS a mistake. We are reading history with a very clear understanding of the fact that we learn more over time, understanding shifts with the uncovering of new information, etc., so I used it as a teaching moment. He liked the book less as a result, however.I'm dealing with a very precocious reader (probably comparable to an above average high school graduate?) who is not emotionally precocious, so he could easily have caught something that was meant to be a simplification for the intended audience. The book had nice photos, was generally well written, and mostly agreed with our other readings, so I think it is still worth reading if you are studying the Dead Sea Scrolls at an elementary school level. He enjoyed The Mystery of the Dead Sea Scrolls more (a novel), but his favorite reference for this topic was Walking the Bible (children's edition): An Illustrated Journey for Kids Through the Greatest Stories Ever Told .

Qumran's Dead Sea Scrolls reawakened!
Very informative work, written simplistically -- perfect for this age bracket.(On page 22 the word "temporary" may be a word a younger child would not understand).Wish that there was a world map showing where THE MIDDLE EAST is located, as this IS a book for younger children.Otherwise this book has an excellent "handle" on one of the greatest archaeological discoveries and teaches the reader about the evolution of the scrolls. The photographs are excellent and I am happy to see that they are not illustrations, butthe genuine "artifact"!See also: The Dead Sea Scrolls.by Ilene Cooper
