Excellent resource for the MASSIVE battle
It's hard to make sense of this battle, as it wasn't on open fields, so having a book like this is essential. It's unbelievable how much work Bradley put into this book and the series. I was plotting GPS points in Google Maps last night, and the maps just kept coming. I wish he could work with NPS and make a series of trails in the wooded areas with all the relevant information from the book, so we could understand the battle on the ground more clearly. It's one thing to see the maps from above, but once you stand there in the Wilderness - it's just a bunch of trees. I'm headed there again this weekend, and I'm super excited to be armed with this book this time.

Gorgeous presentation and great detail!
This is how the Battle of the Wilderness should be studied! It has just enough detail in the writing to correspond perfectly to the opposing page, great contemporary accounts to back up the detail. The maps are beautifully laid out. I really appreciate the detail of the ground (trees, orchards, fields, etc.) When the units are being described on the opposing page, they are in dark red or blue and when they aren't being described the blue or red is noticeably lighter. Even the size of the square for the regiment changes depending on the number of people involved. Seeing the movement from page to page really helps you understand this confusing battle.I can't wait until I can get his future map books as well. They can't get published fast enough! I have each of his other map books and they are all of the similar quality. Savas Beatie books are continually top notch. Great publisher!

Required reading for anyone interested in the Overland Campaign
this book is an invaluable resource if you're interested in the Civil War. In fact, buy the entire series. The books have a consistent look and feel over the set and provide a wonderful survey of both the troops engaged and the terrain over which they fought. As a professional game designer, I could not go without this series. simply the best I've seen.

Fabulous way to learn and keep things straight.
I'm always on the lookout for learning materials that help build my understanding in conceptual, understandable, and memorable ways, and which take away a lot of the cognitive load involved in learning something new. This series succeeds on all counts. Count not be better.

I can't think of a better way to understand a confusing subject
I can't think of a better way to understand a confusing subject! I have not purchased any of the prior books in this series but I now understand why they make so much sense when one can watch the battle unfold page by page. That being said, this particular one seems to be riddled with errors that should have been caught in editing such as mislabeled map scales, odd color changes (Union blue to black, Confederate red to orange...) and words used when obviously something else was meant. Unfortunately, I am a person that when I find errors in things that I can recognize, I tend to start questioning the things that I expected to learn from the author. Still,a good read.

Another great book by Bradley Gottfried
This is yet another excellent book by Brad Gottfried. It truly helps one picture the battle. Read this, then visit the field.
