Heartbreaking but Hopeful
TW: Domestic abuse, Sexual abuse, Blackmail, Body Shaming. This was difficult book to read. I’d just finished My Dark Vanessa I guess at that time and just couldn’t read anything dark and so emotionally sapping for a while so put it off. After finishing a fantasy, I finally decided to pick this up and continue from where I left off. This is a very important read and deeply uncomfortable as well.It deals with themes of domestic abuse and the subtle manipulations associated with it, sexual abuse which involved bullying and blackmailing and friendship which runs so deep that nothing can break that powerful bond. It’s heartbreaking but ends on a very positive and hopeful note as both Izzy and her mom, Steph, raise their voices against the injustices perpetrated against them.I did have a problem with the pacing and a few things which didn’t feel real enough, especially Izzy’s relationship with Harry, otherwise would recommend to understand the mind set of survivors of abuse.

One too many heavy themes
I wanted to love this book, especially as it's central theme is so current and so very important, however, I think the abuse Izzy suffered at school was almost swallowed by the hundred other big, important themes also filling her life. The story became less about rape culture in schools and the lack of education around it, and more about the abusive relationship her mother was stuck in. There were one too many heavy themes that made it difficult to resonate with anyone and with any particular aspect of the story. I felt the language and the popular culture references weren't authentic to modern day youths either. This made it difficult to believe in any of them.

Beautiful
The writing is so beautiful, I fell in love with this book right away. Deals with some huge themes, but all through the lens of a teenager, digesting them at her own pace. Feels very realistic, is never patronising or condescending and explores finding your own voice amid the many pressures and influences during adolescence. A stunning debut. Can't wait to see what else this author writes.

A scarily believable story with a vital message at the core
Amy writes about all too familiar issues of domestic violence, coercive control, and rape. They are handled with sensitivity through the eyes of an engaging protagonist, Izzy, and the cast of supporting characters are all well-drawn and realistic. The book delivers an upbeat message about female entitlement, without preaching, and stands on the quality of the writing and the strength of the story.

Excellent read.
I found this book thought provoking. I bought it for my teenage daughter who loved it and had read it in a few days. This was unusual, normally it takes weeks for her to read a book as you can't drag her away from a screen. I soon realised why; it is easy to enjoy Beashel's story telling, the writing flows and the characters are absorbing. The book tackles difficult subjects (control, coercion, manipulation) and it really makes you think about how vulnerable we all have the potential to be, given the circumstances. It also reminded me to take the time to listen to, and listen out for, my children trying to tell me something when they don't know how to! Well done to the author, I can't wait for the next book.

a must read for EVERYONE
I bought this to read as a mother of three teenagers as I needed an insight into their world. I’m so glad I did, ladies, the world is changing. READ THIS! Beashel has written a heart wrenching novel, that hits every nerve. She navigates her way around rape culture and coercive control without being explicit, leaving you feeling uncomfortable, but wanting resolution. 5 stars for this debut author. I’m left wanting more.
