High quality refill
I am very happy to have ordered this original Waterman ballpoint refill. When I was growing up my parents always had this classic Waterman pen mixed in their regularly used pens in the living room... except I never saw it being used. The pen had a red body and I am placing it as a 50s or 60s item. The ink cartidge had long been empty, with inside an unusual refill, slim like a Cross but with an indentation to act as stopper to the push mechanism's spring. When I inherited the pen I tried to find a similar refill in local pen stores, but could not find anything like it. Then I took a chance and ordered a current Waterman ballpoint refill, thinking it might fit my family pen, even though it didnt look the same and my pen was probably 50 years old or more. And bingo, the old pen that probably has not been put to use in decades came to life again, and now writes beautifully thanks to a well-made refill. I only regret not looking for a new Waterman-branded insert much sooner... but plan to ensure that the pen makes up for the lost time from this point on!

Different sources, different quality on refills
I have been using Waterman pens for 20 years, and the refills are spotty in quality, due to the origin of the manufacture. Ones that come from France are exemplary, as well as the English refills. German ones are great, but multi-national production of a singular product always adds complications in critiquing a product. Unfortunately, one never knows where any given refill is coming from, but the quality of ink, flow, depth of color all vary greatly on the mfg. Keep that in mind before making hasty conclusions.Because of the variances in manufacture location and process, Waterman refills sometimes can be very light blue (in ferule color and ink color) and somewhat restricted flow (even from a Medium-point, much like the Fine-points of the same style), ranging to very dark blue and extremely fast, almost blotty flow. About 1/3 of the 20 refills I have currently, are the lighter blue, lower flow type. They do improve their flow over time, but strangely, around the 1/2 way mark; which admittedly is very long to wait for a point to flow (very) well. This is especially true with most, if not all of their fine-points (but results are rewarding over time). The dark blue and medium blue (again, ink and refill ferrule-end) flow evenly and strongly right off the bat, but a tissue to clean the tip is advised, over long writing sessions.Compared to Cross or Parker, historically for me, Waterman has been superior in most respects of pen quality. I have and still love Parker Pens. Mont Blanc is fantastic, but they too have their strengths and weaknesses. Again, I try not to always look at purchases from the 'why aren't you perfect for me' standpoint, but about overall value in their market, and their section in their vertical (of that market).

This refill worked great
I didn't realize when I ordered it that I was buying a "blue" one, but it has worked out well and I'm pleased with my purchases

Good refills
I love my Waterman Allure pens! These refills are great, I prefer a fine tip and black ink so these are perfect. Very satisfactory!

So far, so good
I have just received this refill and only the truly obsessed could complain about it right out of the package, which does not mean that every one, even off the same line, is equal if they have sloppy tolerances and QC. Personally, I find it a bit smoother than the one I am replacing; for me, this is less desirable. The subtle difference is very noticeable in my diminished ability to control it on smooth paper. But I cannot bring myself to slam it for this, even if it is not to my delicate, personal taste. Feels more like a roller ball.I am replacing one that was about ten years old and felt great, not gritty at all but not so ice-skatingly smooth. Was it always that way or did the ten years have something to do with it?I momentarily thought, "This is not ~blue~ ink, this is blue-black." But, no, it is blue. It just flows a bit more freely and lays down a bit more ink. Not splotchy at all, though, a very nice line.My original "refill" was leaking and had fouled the mechanism. I first thought that I would replace the entire pen before I discovered that my classic, marbled case at twenty-some bucks is no longer available. But a little soaking in alcohol of the bit that goes directly on top of the refill...soaking plus Q-tips, dissolved the dried ink and cleaned it up nicely. Then I started reading all the complaints about lousy Chinese manufacturing and counterfeit refills plaguing all of the manufacturers of nice pens, problems that they all seem rather breezy about once they have sold you an expensive plastic case. I was tempted to go with the great-performing disposables by Uniball and others but no matter how good the ink-delivery guts are, I want some size and weight in my pen. All of this angst in spite of the fact that I actually use a pen very little, hence, the ten year life from my previous refill. But when I do pick it up, I want it to feel right!I am going to make a point of keeping this pen at hand so that it will get frequent use even if only for phone numbers and such and not for pages and pages of legal pads. I want to assess how it does over time and will update these remarks and the rating.UPDATE, 9/19/14 - It has been a few months now of my light but frequent use. Absolutely no complaints. I am as pleased as on the day I opened the package.
