Q: What is the stone made of?

Unfortunately I don't know, the actual stone type, having said that, I have not had any problems with it, if you are a professional and sharpen a lot, you may want to look into other grit levels, but I use it, but. Not weekly

Q: How hard are these stones? I have a stone from another brand that is so soft it won't lap my chisels.

I have a stone that is 1000 grit on one side and 4000 grit on the other. I have used it for a few years now. It works very well on chisels and on plane irons.
