Fantastic Grass Seed for Shady Areas!
I absolutely love this dense fescue shade blend! It grows fast with a high germination rate, and it couldn’t be easier to apply. I just rake the loose dirt, sprinkle it in, protect the area, and give it plenty of water for a couple of weeks. Sure enough, it springs up beautifully, and the patches I’ve filled have stayed consistent season after season. I even scatter it in spots where the grass is a bit thinner, and it always rebounds well, giving my lawn a lush and healthy look. I really appreciate how well it performs in the shaded areas of my Southern California yard. Highly recommend for anyone dealing with shade challenges!

GERMINATION
I would give zero stars, followed the instructions for planting that was listed on the bag and went above and beyond, watered for several days, it's been 14 days now and not one single seed has germinated of approximately 2k square feet I can't find even one blade of new grass I did contact the manufacturer through the Amazon return section, the company has returned the contact Email with a reference number, they want a whole list of information before they'll do a refund, I mean several Questions that require a return answer, one is a picture of the barcode on the bag ( will that got trashed the day I planted the seeds ) , I emailed them back and asked if they also wanted my first born child and my right nut,,, ridiculous, I told them to just keep the $30 and to keep their worthless products, too much of a hassle. Just go to tractor supply and get your seeds, but don't buy Pennington brandsUpdate 03/24/2025I suppose I'm gonna have to eat crow, I give it 5 stars,21 days later after planting and it appears that all of the seeds have germinated and looking very good. Have a good day

50% Growth
Pacific NW. Started planting a few weeks ago. April 2022. I've been a gardener for years and wanted a grass that would hold up in shade. Ground was well prepped. Yard gets about 3-5 hours of sunlight a day and it's about 1200 square feet. We did have more rain than normal this spring and very little of the seed is taking root. Lots of culls. I now will be applying a 4th bag, 3rd planting, trying to get some growth and a consistent look. Also, the last bag delivered was broken open and someone tried to patch it with Amazon tape. The pre-fertilized feature might hinders the gemination. I purchased 4 bags of item, April 15th, May 7th and 22nd and June 6th (Pennington Smart Seed Dense Shade Grass Mix 7 lb.) and applied shortly after receiving it to newly prepared topsoil in back yard shade 3 times this spring. Also, this spring applied different mfg. grass seed in sunnier front yard area and 3rd area, different mfg. seed in community right-a-way. I work in landscaping with HOA. The Pennington seed did not perform as I hoped. It is patchy and much of the seed did not germinate. The other brands have performed very well. We had planned various family back yard activities this summer and cannot use the space at all.07-18-22 What is growing in beautiful still patchy. Mfg stands behind product. Contact them for more info. I will recap later this summer.

Grows where no grass would grow before!
We have a beautiful couple of trees out front that have slowly snuffed out our lovely St. Augustine due to their shadey ways. We spent an entire Saturday tilling, adding soil and laying sod only for it to slowly die out (watering regularly). We thought it was a parasite or bad soil but we didn't have the heart to spend another $1500 having more sod installed. We noticed our neighbor down the street has similar shade coverage and their yard is incredibly thick and green. So i asked them what they used....it was this stuff. So we tilled up the yard, watered liberally, added the seed and watered a bit more...It's been about 10 days and we are seeing some awesome growth! You can see in the photos how much bald dirt there is, so you can imagine how bad it was before! We are excited about this first growth and it's getting denser every day!

poor result
Terrible. I planted this in shady areas in which Scotts Sun and Shade had grown previously, albeit thinly, hoping to get a better result. I planted standard tall fescue elsewhere under the same conditions. The tall fescue first appeared within about 8 days and is growing fine. I assumed the shady mix would take longer and, indeed there was some small growth within 3 weeks. But for the most part the shady areas are bare soil.

10/10 grass seed!!
Absolutely amazing! My backyard was completely dead grass & 90% dirt for 5 years. I made sure to use a garden hoe, then blocked it off with chicken wire so my dogs wouldnt walk on it & laid hay ontop & watered it every other day or so. Now doing the other side of the yard!! The grass is thick and so green. Absolutely will be using this again.

Works great if you follow directions
I wish I’d taken before pictures of our yard. We have st Augustine grass that has thinned out significantly over the years due to two large oak trees in our yard. We started using this grass seed last year to fill in the bare spots. I cannot begin to tell you what a difference it has made. Our yard looks 100% better than it did before. And this is way cheaper than getting some landscape person in to put sod down.
