Extremely comprehensive. It is an edition from the mid-2000s so some data may be outdated, but if you’re looking for a genuine reference book with plenty of information on animals. This is great deal for the amount of book you get.

un libro fantastico che descrive tutti i più grandi gruppi di mammiferi, entrando nel dettaglio di alcune particolari specie. varrebbe la pena acquistarlo solo per le foto!

Highly readable, large, paperback guide to all the known mammals in the World containing an absolute wealth of information about the habitats and habits of the 5,000 plus species. It is, quite clearly, a quality product which is beautifully illustrated with fascinating colour photographs, brilliant drawings and helpful maps and the handy factfiles at the beginning of each entry provide relevant thumbnail snapshots of the various species. These brief factfiles also have lovely little maps indicating where the mammals can be found on the planet and give a comparison of the size of the mammal to humans. Although the entries are compiled by numerous experts, they are well laid out, clearly written and will be easily understood by the general reader. An appendix at the back of the book provides an excellent species list and there is an extensive bibliography to boot. In addition there is a glossary of terms which will prove helpful to the average reader and a thorough, alphabetical index to help you easily locate whatever interests you in the encyclopedia.This is, most definitely, a must buy for anyone interested in mammals and I have to say that I am absolutely delighted with it.

２０年くらい前に平凡社版で「動物大百科」（全２０巻）として刊行されたものの、今回のものはその新版であり、内容もかなり一新されて新しいデーターが取り入れられている。写真も大幅に入れ替わり、しかもどれも美しく目を見張るようなものばかりだ。大きな本で分厚くて重いが、綺麗な動物写真が多いので凄く得をした感じがする。寝床で横になりながら写真だけでも見ているだけで十分な価値がある。動物に興味のある者なら必ず欲しくなるだろう。
