The Rabbit Problem

AWESOME! -I bought this for Bunny, but I was blown away by the creativity in visualizing integer sequences & predictive modeling
I believe honesty is very important and so I am going to be honest with you...as you can tell from the pictures that I have attached, I purchased this book primarily because I own a rabbit and the idea of taking a picture of my mischievous rabbit next to a book all about mischievous rabbits amused me.With that said, I read it and I was blown away!!! This does not read like a normal book...rather, GET THIS...it's literally a calendar that documents specifically-related events in sequential ordering, and the initial questions are asking the readers to perform a basic task of predictive modeling that uses integer sequences to predict a future outcome. HOLY MOLY!!! As a researcher who is often working with statistics and data visualization, I am absolutely floored by the creativity to illustrate concrete numerical concepts using abstract out-of-the-box thinking. The author has a real gift. This is a fantastic way to begin to show how one can apply basic quantitative modeling in the real-world, and why it is an important life skill. This book creates discussion that could be transitioned to something such as predicting how much food one will need for the next 7 days when they know the amount of food consumed each day will vary. The illustrations in it are excellent, as is the interaction of the 'pop ups.' These popups contain their own interesting numerical trends and patterns, which a teacher could challenge students to find and identify, and it would give them a really creative task.So it's a pretty awesome book. I admit I bought it purely because I own a rabbit, but upon reading it I was thoroughly impressed with the creativity. I highly recommend it.

I dream of rabbits!
I purchased this for my grandaughter who is 5. I will give it to her on her birthday if I csncontain myself! The book is beautiful, clearly and simply written. The illustrationns and zinger at the end is terrific. It is educational , I know what you are thinking, but I will let you know in September what she thinks of it!

Hilarious rabbit lives and problems
As someone who has several litters of rabbits with my 9YO daughter, we could certainly relate to the month-by-month rabbit stories. Emily Gravett did an excellent job of writing and illustrating this book / calendar. I don't buy a lot of children's books but I had to have this one when a writer friend shared it with me. Thanks for the laughs, Emily, and the additional surprises on many of the pages.

The attention to detail is astounding
What a delight! Though this is not a classic storybook, like a bedtime story you'd read a young child, older kids and surely any grownup with a sense of humor and whimsy is sure to be enthralled. You will get lost in the drawings and little add-ons and pop-outs throughout the book. Though I've seen this promoted as a way to teach addition and multiplication, it's not really a serious tutorial. In fact, some parents might be having more of a birds and bees discussion if any bright, curious child wonders why the bunnies are reproducing at such an alarming rate. I feel the target audience is an older child who appreciates nuanced illustration, lists, recipes, and anecdotes rather than recycled tales with a clear beginning, middle and end. But hunkering down to explore each month (two pages represent each calendar month), I find myself discovering something new with each visit. A visual feast and a new modern classic at our house.

What a fun book. Full of math
What a fun book. Full of math, rabbits, humor, and a good story that seems to go viral. Emily Gravett is one of my favorite authors because she uses the format of a picture book to create something that goes beyond a traditional picture book. She is just what our imagination's are waiting for.

Hilariously Funny!
I originally bought this book for my niece years ago, and I thought that it was too great not to get for myself. I don't think that you will be disappointed with this purchase. Plus there is an exciting scene at the very end. So if you want variety, this is something for you.

Very Best Rabbit Book Eveer
This very clever book is funny and particularly to us who have lived it. The illustrations and pop-ups are fantastic! I am particularly glad they have the rabbits live in a field rather than cages. One of the best books for children I've seen! I think adults will like it even more than kids as the humor is a bit implied.

Bel libro

Exquisite book- but perhaps not for everyone.
Several reviewers have expressed confusion about the intended audience so I add my own thought on this.Firstly the illustrations are exquisite and the book is packed full of fun details. My almost 8 year old, incredibly serious bookworm daughter loves it, and spends a long time examining every last detail. My Barbie loving 6 year old daughter looked at it once. My almost 3 year old son is only interested in diggers and other noisy things so was not impressed, anyway there are too many fiddly bits for a toddler.Much in the same way that many family films contain jokes that are obviously for an adult audience, so to, this is a book to appeal to grown ups (who are still kids at heart?) It is probably best suited (in no particular order) to; fans of pop up books, rabbits lovers, illustrators, bookworms (especially if you prefer something a little more quirky). You will notice I haven't mentioned the plot. Well there isn't really one. Just a lot of rabbits in a field doing what rabbit naturally do (that isn't depicted by the way!) If I'm really honest I bought this book for me (and hoped the kids would like it too). I am a designer/illustrator myself (and green with envy) so that was part of the appeal of the book to me. It isn't really intended to teach maths but does use it in a fun way.If you are unsure about purchasing why not try borrowing from the library first (get it on inter-library loan if your local library doesn't have it). I think once you have seen it you will want your own copy. If you do like this book, try Spells by Emily Gravett.
