Revamped Rapunzel Reading
This attractive, robust hardback is amongst the first stage of a series of books developed in conjunction with the University of Surrey with further stages covering longer and more detailed stories for readers growing in confidence. I bought it to accompany a Rapunzel doll for a grand-daughter's 4th birthday present - and she loves it. Text is excellent for reading to children, and furthermore the print size and layout is well suited to readers who have just started reading alone. The story is based on the Grimms' Fairy Tale of a beautiful girl imprisoned in a tower by a wicked witch until eventually saved by a handsome Prince. It is faithfully retold by Susana Davidson with enchanting colourful illustrations by Desideria Guicciardini. Narrative is modern with such matters as pregnancy craving, and language is up to date as with Rapunzel bemoaning "I'm so bored" or the Prince exclaiming "yuck". This appeals to my grand-daughter who is unaware that Rapunzel is another name for Rampion (Latin: Campanula Rapunculus) - a vegetable used in broth and salads - but she appreciates the final part of the story when Rapunzel and her Prince name their children Pumpkin, Lettuce and Sprout!
