Great book and wonderful transaction
The book is long out of print and a wonderful, perhaps the finest, guide to New England flies and their related artificials. The transaction itself was great; accurate description -- if anything the seller was overly conservative in their saying it was in VERY GOOD condition; it looks brand new -- and the book arrived very quickly and was well packaged.

Orvis recommended this book to me.
This is a great book for matching the hatch and showing what flies to imitate them. For some reason this book is out of circulation and can only be bought used at 4 times its original price. For beginners it was well worth the hundred bucks.

A "must have" for New England fly fishers
Mr. Ames has done a monumental, exhaustive work here, but has somehow accomplished to present it in a friendly, organized format. You won't want to ever leave this book behind. He has joined what is obviously his two loves, entomology and photography, into a reference work that no New England fly fisher should be without. It's apparent that he knows his Latin, but he doesn't require you to know it! Mr. Ames is clearly an accomplished photographer, as these pictures of "bugs" in there habitat cannot be gotten easily. Not only that, but his photos of flies that match the "bugs" are also superb. As a bonus, Mr. Ames shares his presentation techniques for different "bugs" in various situations. But, the sum of the parts is even better than all these great elements. This work comes off as a book you don't want to put down ... that just doesn't happen everyday with a reference book! If you are in New England and you fly fish, you have to get this book!

Makes Me Feel Like An Expert
I simply don't have the time to make an in-depth study to entomology. With this book I don't feel a need to. It has chapters on the basic techniques of fishing Wets, Dries, Nymphs, which I find very helpful. But what makes this book special is that Mr. Ames devotes a full page to each stage of most northeast flies, and describes where and when those insects can be found, how they behave, and how they can be caught. Before I head to the stream, I simply read up on the insects I expect to find and, therefore, have a solid game plan in place when I step into the water. Also, the photography of the flies is great. This is one of the most used fly-fishing books I own.Randy

The information is fantastic. But the book has been described to me ...
The information is fantastic. But the book has been described to me as "prosaic" and "beautifully written" and it is not those things. The author is an okay writer, not great, and gets carried away with how poetic he tries to be about fly fishing. But definitely worth it for the hatch info.

Most important Fly Fishing book I own
I can not think of a more important book (for those who live in the New England) for some one looking to improve their fly fishing. Once you learn how to cast and wade into water the very next step is learning how to identify your bugs. Not only does it provide the standard pics of the bugs but it also explains their cycles and provides the corresponding flies to use during the different stages. This is a perfect gift for any fly fisherman you know. If you fly fish and don't have this book and live in the New England buy this book now. Best investment I have made in my fly fishing hands down!

Great little book
Great little book. The best thing is that it is concise and to the point. The left page shows the natural and the right page shows the different variants of the artificial...perfect. Descriptions include taxonomy, size, colour and morphology, hatch period, time and location. Other pockets of information are offered in the handy and invaluable reference. Best regards, GLA.
