One of my favorite X-Men Stories!
One of the greatest X-Men stories ever! To me it seemed like this was the culmination of everything ever built up to this point from as far back as GS XM #1. And if Claremont had decided to end it here and take a bow after this climatic tale, I would have been perfectly alright with that, standing, clapping sternly with tears in my eyes like a total fanboy. (SPOILER ALERT)..."What a way to go", indeed. Though the X-Men did in fact die they were quickly resurrected by the Goddess Roma. So the drama of the X-men's death was a little short lived. I love the X-Men as much as anyone but if they had really died and stayed dead it would have been the most dramatic most emotional, most heroic and ironic death for the outlaw band of heroes i can imagine. I know, Marvel is not going to kill off their most successful franchise and this all fit in so convenietly with Storm's plan Omega. The entire series is filled with great storytelling, that hasn't changed. What's funny is how much more I appreciate Marc Silvestri's old art and how my feelings for Todd McFarlane's old art have waned (one issue of Hulk included). I used to LOVE McFarlane and my feelings for Silvestri at the time were just meh. As the final dialogue is given in this Titanic tale by Roma, she says to the X-Men, "you have become legends". A fitting and just title considering all the suffering the X-Men had been through up to this point of self-sacrifice. I was disappointed by Marvel for calling the collected edition proceeding this run "Inferno prologue". It should have been called, X-Men: The Legends. But I digress. Louise Simonson wrote a somewhat less serious, quirky drama for the New Mutants run (2nd half) of this book. Filled with ridiculous characters like Birdbrain, Dr. Animus, Smile faces and human-like animals...I know, it's a comic book. (SPOILER ALERT) The drama and emotion really intensified at the end when Magneto confronts the New Mutants and has to come to grips with Doug's death and how to inform his family, in addition to feeling like he let down Charles Xavier and his dream. Charles had given Magneto sole responsibility for the care and mentorship of his students back around UXM # 200. I always loved Bret Blevins art but his characters appear prepubescent and malnourished. I know this is supposed to be a book about teens, but even the adults in the stories seem cartoonishly small. Compared to previous artists' renditions of the New Mutants they appear to have grown younger in some weird side affect of Marvel Time (Sarcasm...don't get me started). Bottom line is this...GET IT! Awesome stories, awesome drama, great dialogue and character development, everything that made Marvel Great in the 1980's!

Not an easy one to get through
This is probably my least favorite part of Claremont's run next to Inferno. It focuses a lot on Storm and Forge as they go on a kind of Spirit Quest. There are lots of demons and visions and whatnot, which just isn't what I'm really looking for from an X-Men comic. I like Forge, but he grows into a better character later in the run. Through a modern lens some of the Native American spiritualism here would probably be considered offensive even. It's well intentioned but it falls back on certain tropes. The rest of the X-Men just slug it out with Mystique's Brotherhood and the Marauders, which they had been doing for years already. The conclusion leads to the weirdest X-Men status quo of all time, so overall yea, skip this one unless you are trying to read through the whole run. The second volume, which focuses entirely on X-Factor, is much better.

Interesting stories. It has sixteen comic issues in it and for a cheaper price. Continues after the X-men Mutant Massacre issues.
