NEEDS MODIFICATION TO FUNCTION EFFECTIVELY
I bought this product to replace a wooden squirrel feeder that had been destroyed by woodpeckers. The recycled glass construction did solve the woodpecker problem. However, it created new problems that required me to make some modifications. (1) I covered both ends of the plastic window with three layers of duct tape to tighten the fit and keep the squirrels from lifting the window and taking the nuts out from the bottom. Otherwise, they throw most of the nuts onto the ground while looking for what they consider to be the best one. (2) I also covered the top of the plastic window with three layers of duct tape to keep the squirrels from injuring themselves on the sharp edge as they climbed head first into the feeder to reach nuts at the bottom. It would be a good idea to raise the floor of the feeder by placing a block of wood inside so the squirrels did not have to reach so far and practically climb all the way inside to retrieve a nut. (3) I tied a rope around the hinge end of the top of the feeder so that when closed it left about an inch of space between the top and the plastic window. The top of this feeder is heavier than the tops of most wooden feeders and the younger squirrels have a hard time lifting it. Leaving an inch of space makes it easier for them to get the leverage they need to lift the top. (4) If you do not want to go to the trouble of modifying this feeder, you might be better off buying one of the many wooden feeders on the market and taking your chances with woodpeckers. But, even without woodpecker damage, the wooden feeders will not survive weathering and ordinary wear and tear as well as this one..

Replaced wooden feeder with this one
We have been through two wooden feeders and decided to replace the last one with this composite plastic. We have a bird feeder of the same material and it has held up well. The wooden ones eventually rot and have to be replaced. We have very ambitious raccoons that make keeping the jar intact a challenge. We use a bungee cord to keep them from knocking the jar to the ground.

Jenkins squirrel feeder
I have been using this squirrel feeder for about 8 months now. I consider this feeder well built and very durable.I chose to mount this feeder on the top rail of my deck for ease of access to clean and refill. The width of the feeder matches the width of the 2" x 6" top rail (5.5" wide). As can be seen from the photo, I secured the feeder to the top rail using 3 long plastic tie wraps.I fill my feeder with unshelled peanuts, acorns from my oak tress, and black seeds I use for my bird feeders. The squirrels do tend to shell these items in the direct vicinity of the feeder. This does create debris that needs to be swept or blown from the deck.If I were to make one suggestion, it would be tl have the ability to clean out the little house area of debris easier than reaching in and using ones fingers to scoop up the leavings.I would suggest mounting this unit where it is easily accessed. I have to refill this feeder about every two days.It is entertaining to watch the squirrels feeding. On several occasions, two squirrels have tried to feed at the same time. They will get into a tussle in the glass jar. I have wished for video as the two squirrels will go round and round akin to clothes in a dryer. Most humorous.

Took a couple weeks but squirrels love it
It was funny to watch the first couple weeks as the squirrels would lift the lid and let it go and (BONK) they would be hit in the head when the lid came down but they soon learned to lean inside and hold it up with their back, I have 4 squirrels fighting over it so I am buying a second one. I also had a big fat Racoon raiding it at night so now I only put food into the feeder in the morning and the squirrels clean it out during the day. Since it is empty at night the Racoon has now quit showing up. ----- Edit - Forgot to mention that I put anti-skid tape on mine (on the lifting lid and outer floor and I have had no problem with squirrels lifting the lid and getting into the feeder and they sit on the anti-skid while eating the nuts.

It's great after a quick modification.
The media could not be loaded. Update 9/2/23 - took some metal wire and stapled it in a "V" around the entrances. This allows the squirrel's to get in but fully stops the bluejays. Their wings hit the wire and they can't hop in. They have given up trying. No issues anymore.I'm mixed about this. Easily could be made for less than 30 dollars.... so there's that.On the other hand it is very well built but.....within 20 minutes the bluejays took notice and started taking peanuts. Soon to follow was the squirrels followed by tufted titmouse. I hadn't figured on birds using it but I should have figured. As I'm writing this I happened to look out the window and filmed this trapped bluejay. If I could go back I would have purchased the other option where the squirrels needs to lift open the lid in order to access the peanut. Bluejays are massing around the feeder. Maybe I'll try dried corn. That's my real time review.Update - this item kills and injures birds. I put corn cobs inside and walked away. 5 hours later I came home to an injured bluejay trying to fly over my fence and a dead bird inside the jar. I removed the bird and walked away to see what happened.... Again another bluejay entered the jar..... He could not turn around and kept flying/jumping smashing his head into the top of the jar trying to escape. Bluejay was in full blown panic mode. I immediately ran out and let him free.Amazon is USELESS with any help. The seller BIRDS CHOICE is also useless. Do not purchase this item. This item was clearly not tested in the field.

Squirrels love it
I’ve been using this now for several years and have no issues. It’s sturdy and holds up well in the Canadian elements!

Very heavy lid
My grey squirrels can get into the feeder but they don't seem to like it. If I put any other feeder out they will avoid this one in favor of the other feeders. The only thing wrong with it is the lid is too heavy for them. The older adults can manage it but it is way too heavy for the young squirrels. The feeder is built to last but unless I can lighten the lid it's not really that usable.

Not satisfied with this product
One thing that was not mentioned before purchasing this product for Canadian squirrels is apparently they must undergo and successfully pass an IQ test. We have several squirrels coming to visit this feeder, but none of them have figured out that the lid needs to be lifted to access the treats.Based on the squirrels inability to figure out how to access the much loved nuts I do not recommend this feeder.
