Very good pedal, however, I'm not convinced by the "trail" aspect.
A bit of background first: I'm a 20-plus year SPD user and have SPD pedals on each of my bikes.I got these for my fatbike to use during winter riding. These are Shimano pedals, you know what to expect: they're not particularly lightweight. In my opinion, the superior durability, function, bearings and spindle more than make up for the extra weight. Speaking of weight, mine weighed in at 408g, just like the listing says.Using these pedals is a dream. Engaging them is buttery smooth, they just seem to suck the cleat in. Exiting from them is likewise smooth and drama-free. I've experienced no issues with them being clogged with snow, but our snow is cold and dry and not very sticky.I picked these because the integrated cage. I thought it would provide a bit more of a pedaling platform with extra stability. In practice, this is not the case. When my shoes are clipped in, no portion of the sole comes in contact with the extended cage, so that extra metal isn't providing any stability for my pedaling. Maybe it serves some other function, perhaps someone can comment and enlighten me. For now, I'll just say they only add weight and you should get the PD-M780 http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008K7LR3Y instead of this one. Despite recommending another pedal, I'm still giving it 4 stars because it's a very fine pedal.Bonus PSA:In the "Frequently bought together" section, Amazon suggests a 15mm wrench along with these pedals. That wrench won't work with these, you need an 8mm Allen to install them. That wrench might be handy to remove your old ones though.

Not impressed
I have ridden Shimano clipless pedals for the past 13 years, and bought these to replace my trusty but worn prior pair. Despite the 50g increase in pedal wt over the non-platform version, I was excited to get these because I occasionally search for a pedal during jumps if I come unclipped and was hoping that this version would help remedy that. However, I agree with some of the prior reviews: these are really, really hard to get out of. I have been riding a lot of technical trails in NM and CO over the past 10 days with these pedals, and I have had more wrecks during that time than in the past year...largely because I cannot get out of them in time, the right worse than the left. I have them on the easiest setting, and have degreased them and also tried 2 different lubes, as well as no lube (thinking dirt sticking to the coils caused the problem) but no luck. I crashed 3 times today on familiar trails, once I am embarrassed to say on the road because I could not unclip the right and fell over hard. I honestly thought I broke my hand on the second fall through a flat and unassuming rock garden. I was so unnerved after that I had to walk down sections I would previously had done in the dark. No joke. Maybe your pedals will be better b/c some have had favorable reviews...but I am putting my old SPDs back on and sending these back to Shimano. Good luck...and wear knee pads!

Nice, comparable to XTR at half the cost
I own two sets of these, and have logged more than 1,000 miles between the two. These are good pedals, that are nearly as light as their XTR cousins, and half the cost. The price premium for the minimal weight savings in between the two does not make it worth it in my opinion. The minimalist cage on these is perfect for when you need to mount the bike in less than ideal situations. Coming from the full cage of the 545s, these are a smaller version which is just as good. I would not recommend trying to clip out and ride on top of them in sketchy terrain, that's not what the cage is for (unlike the 545s which were marketed like that). Another plus of these over the 545s is that the cage is integral, and not an add on which can creak after time. The spring is plenty powerful to keep you clipped in on rock strikes, which was an Achilles heel of the 545. The clips are easy to get in and out of, and locate easily. I like these and will buy another set when my last set of 545s finally die.

Larger platform, same clipless security
Rather than bring my old Time ATAC pedals over from a previous mountain bike to my new toy (Yeti 575), I decided to invest in the M785s because of the larger pedaling platform as well as the Shimano name/brand history.Did a little research on the Shimano, clipless "platform" line-up ( the M530, the XT and the XTR ) and decided on these because of the Ultegra-ish pedigree of quality components, good materials, at a great price ( for a super-helpful review, search for "Shootout: Shimano Pedals Go Toe to Toe" which can be found on the Mountain Bike Action web site ).After riding for a month, absolutely no complaints ( others reviews noted difficulty un-clipping, and a pedal squeek...). And the larger platform, for me, was a great value-add for those times when you simply don't have time to clip back in, but still need to mash the pedal for a stroke or two. Easy in ( audible click noise ), easy out with minimal effort ( heel kick, outward, which you just have to make a habit...) and good "security" when pushing/pulling on uphill climbs or maneuvering during descents. As a reference, I'm a cross-country / trail rider in the Breckenridge CO area, with plenty of clipless pedal hours logged on road and triathlon bikes as well ( meaning, I feel comfortable in clipless...) but not a complete gear head. I take care of my stuff, but am a buy it, clean-and-lube-it-every-once-in-a-while, and it better work type of rider.

Love these pedals
Love these pedals!!! Installed these to replace some low end wellgo pedals that have dome the trick on my mountain bike for 2 seasons. Since placing these pedals a month ago on my bike, my feet feels more secure and I have a stronger stroke. Love the wide platform... feels solid. I also find its easier to find the pedals when cl;ipping in. It's adjustability allowed me to find the right tension to clip in easily, stay in, and can unclip when needed.Highly recommended and I can not find a better price anywhere else.
