superb story telling
Marillier has a way with words that captures me, takes me in, keeps me reading, wanting more. Whether it is her descriotions of trees, forest, ferns, moss….or magical small creatures thta her imaginatiin informed by so much past lore, has created. In truth i hung on pur suspense as to how Dau and Liobhan would be able to extricate themslevs from the web of decit and lies that surrounded them. Happy endings yes, but not without paying the price of reading through and dwelling in the darker side of human, and fey, nature. I didnt think there was an author wh could bring me into the world of small stream, grassy boundaires, flowers, insects, small creatures mysteriously making their way…somewhere. And love and honour and comradeship - not soppy, but strong and firm like the trunks and branches of the oak tress she and her creatures dwell in. Love the first two books in this series and am ready to dive into the third.

Adventurous, captivating, and emotional
This sequel is just as exciting and page-turning as the first, with far different scenarios. The original three return, with their different viewpoints. Growth and conflict ensue! This is a different kind of adventure, and great to see how these characters struggle and thrive.

Compelling writing but contains animal torture
I came back to this author after many years, since I'd read a lot of her previous books. I have found this trilogy to be more compelling writing than I remember from her. I am leaving this review, however, because both this and the previous book contain descriptions of animal torture. If I had known this, I wouldn't have bought the book, and unfortunately there's no comprehensive way to be aware of these things beforehand. But I wanted to give a heads up to other readers who may, like me, prefer to avoid books with this content.

Earned & Endearing Friendship
I was really surprised by the opening of this story, and I hate to spoil that surprise for others. I wasn't surprised to find Liobhan and Dau growing closer, having their relationship change, but I was shocked by what catapults their friendship to the next level. Suffice to say that Liobhan's selflessness and loyalty make her one of the most loveable characters I've read in some time.Following Brocc's story in the Otherworld, at first, seemed like a very entertaining and intriguing side-plot. But Marillier really brings the two plots together in a satisfying way. This book takes on some very tricky issues and handles them deftly, revealing so very much about our trio of heroes. Finished this one and immediately tore into book three. Masterful storytelling!

Exhilarating and Wonderful
Juliet Marillier's writing is top notch and her ability to draw you into a story is unbeatable. The tale of the Swan Island warriors just keeps getting more interesting. What I always like is how a wealth of details and excellent pacing get you softly but surely to the edge of your expectational seat. The beginning often requires paying careful attention, though this author always provides a good amount of readers support in who's who and what words mean, even how they are pronounced. But after a few chapters the book gets harder and harder to put down. About two thirds through I was totally over the edge and had to sit and read on and on to satisfy the desire to know what is going to happen.Truly, I love her characters no matter how irascible they may start out to be. This is an outstanding book to be read again and again.

Complex characters and a gripping plot
Juliette Marillier is a master story teller. This series is fantastic. I love the characters and the connection to Blackthorn & Grim. Marillier goes deeply into her characters’ psychology but the plot moves. Her characters grow at just the right pace and feel so real. I love her stories and they just get better as she continues to write. Specifically, the main character Liobhan is complex, sensitive, strong, a trained warrior, and has healing instincts. Plus she’sa V talented musician. I love how fighting, music, and magic weave together in these stories.

A Great Delve into Family Life
This was a wonderful middle book for what, at this point, might be a trilogy, although Ms. Marillier has said that she has ideas for several books in this series. As other reviewers have mentioned, this is a book that focuses on families, - healthy famies and dysfunctional families. Dau, who has been terribly abused by his family, is finally able to confront his family as an adult and happily discovers that one family member not only regrets his past actions but wants to build a new relationship with him. Liobhan and Brocc have grown up in a wonderful, healthy family. But no reviewer so far has mentioned Brocc's continuing questions about his birth mother and father, since he is adopted. I was so glad to see the return of Conmael, the half human, half fey male, who appears first in the Blackthorn and Grimm novels. He was always one of my favorite characters! As Brocc begins to develop a relationship with him I have hopes that in the next book, Brocc and the reader will discover more about his birth parents and more about the mysterious and fascinating Conmael.

Great second book
A good continuation of this series, pretty satisfying and leaves wanting to know what's next without a cliffhanger.

Wonderful story as always
As always Juliet Marillier takes us to a fantastic journey. It is even better if you have read the previous book with the warrior bards, but even without it, this is a nice story, with interesting plot and nice twists.

Superb!
I have read all of Juliet's books and loved everyone. Her ability to create characters you can connect with and invest in seems effortless. When I read one of her books I lose myself in it completely and become part of that magical world. Indeed, I dislike being dragged back to the reality of ours! Keep them coming please .

Fantastic new adventure with love, loss, hope and more!
An absolutely fantastic book! Juliet Marillier has given her fans another incredible story. Her Swan Island warriors are characters you can't help but feel connected to. Their paths are complicated but they are full of strength and compassion. It's bittersweet having a new Marillier novel... you don't want to put it down for a second but once you've finished you have to wait for the next ones arrival! I can't wait to see what happens next. Any fan of Juliet Marillier will be happy to read this next adventure of the Swan Island Warriors. Sooooo good! Thankyou Juliet!
