The Organic Chem Lab Survival Manual: A Student's Guide to Techniques

I recently took Organic Chemistry, and this book does a very good job at explaining all techniques. It gives detailed instructions to succeed in the lab, what to do, what not to do. It also has a touch of humor, which makes it a bit easier to read than serious books because it makes the task less boring. However, the book isn't much different from the previous editions I have seen from my classmates. Organic Chemistry techniques don't really change, so if you're pressed for money, you are better off buying a previous edition.

If you are in Orgo, you absolutely have to have this manual. It's an exhaustive easy-to-understand guide that anticipates all procedural problems that might arise and gives you minute details as to how to cope with them. It is also extremely good at explaining the importance and the role of each step in the procedure so that you actually come to understand what you're doing and why.

So I bought this item because I was intimidated going into the the O-chem lab and I thought this book might help me with pointers and a more thorough understanding of what I was attempting to do. It gave explanations of some of the techniques I have used so far but so does my lab manual. It didn't reveal any 'secrets' that helped me succeed more than my peers or explain techniques more thoroughly or clearly than my lab manual. Unless you have a prof that gives you no help or explanation of techniques, I would skip buying this book. Refer to your lab manual or the techniques companion to the lab manual if there is one at the the library or from your prof.

Book was in great condition. It's like all 6 students that had purchased it before me had just left in sitting on their desks. Which speaks more about the students laziness than the book itself as the book is a fantastic read. Very informative and in layman's terms. A little elbow grease and some goo gone took all stickers off completely. Highly recommend.

This book is suprisingly funny for an org chem lab manual. This is an older version but it doesn't even differ in page number than the new versions. Save your money and go with this guy!

This book breaks down complicated lab procedure into more digestible bites. Easy to read and comprehensive I would recommend it to every person going into organic chemistry lab.

This book is an excellent guide for anybody wanting a introduction to the subject, easy to read and set out really well.....

With his witty language Zubrick literally makes this book hard to put down! Useful tips which really make your first ochem lab more of a success. Includes safety advice, equipment handling as well as expectations for most common experiment outcomes. A great accompaniment to the textbook and lab manual!
