At LONG last, this classic TV soundtrack by legendary film composer/conductor Kenyon Hopkins from the early 1960'sshort-lived series "East Side, West Side" has been issued on cd (and in stereo) by the Sony label. Previously availableonly in a long out-of-print vinyl format, it's great to have this magnificent score back in circulation again. The TV showwas set entirely in New York City and starred George C. Scott as a social worker dealing with all kinds of humanity andtheir problems. Producer David Susskind wanted a musical soundtrack for his CBS show that captured the verve, feeling, and pulse of the vast NYC landscape. As on Kenyon's score for the great 1961 movie "The Hustler", his writing for "EastSide, West Side" accomplished this goal. Hopkins (1912-1983) became known as an artist who knew how to effectivelyemulate "sounds of the city". A former arranger for Paul Whiteman, he was once called one of jazz's great composers &arrangers. Like the original vinyl album (which was released in both mono & stereo), there are 16 tracks on the cd thatcover a wide-ranging variety of moods & images from the show. Many of the cuts are less than 2 minutes in length withthe longest, "Neil's Night Out", at just over 3 1/4, but each one is masterfully scored by Hopkins with unique orchestraltexture and color. As on "The Hustler" soundtrack, the marvelous, legendary jazz saxophonist Phil Woods is prominentlydisplayed on many tracks with superb effect & performances. Moreover, all the musicians that Kenyon used in his jazzycharts for "East Side, West Side", including a string section, are stellar. The TV series lasted only 1 season (1963-1964)and featured 26 episodes with a high quality of writing and acting. It was probably way ahead of its time as it exploredcontroversial, touchy subjects causing many stations to cancel scheduled shows. Really a shame, as the series received8 Emmy Award nominations in 1964. I've had a mint, mono vinyl copy of "East Side, West Side" for many years, hopingthis excellent score would be issued on cd and now it has, thanks to Sony Music. Kenyon Hopkins was a musical genius;his brilliant work on "East Side, West Side" clearly shows why. A timeless, haunting masterpiece (from a long-gone era)that sounds better than ever now on cd. They don't make them like this anymore. Thanks, Kenyon.

THE KENYON HOPKINS "EAST SIDE/WEST SIDE" ALBUM ON CD AT LAST!
I still have my original soundtrack Columbia LP album of "East Side/West Side" released in 1963. Composed and conducted by the talented Kenyon Hopkins, a very underrated and now unjustly ignored composer of jazz based film scores. His two most famous motion picture scores were "Baby Doll" and "The Hustler" among others."East Side/West Side" was an edgy CBS television series starring George C. Scott who played a social worker in the gritty world of New York City. The series lasted only one season due to it's unflinching view of urban life and problems. It was considered too honest and real for the TV viewers of the early 60's. I hope a DVD or Blu-ray of this series might appear someday. This excellent music score has remained one of my favorites all this time. I am so pleased to see this obscure album finally reissued on audio CD by Sony Music after all these years. The remastering from the original stereo master tapes is very good. I doubt this title will be available forever so get it while you can.

A time piece of a sort.
I was, once again, looking on Amazon to see if anyone had gotten around to re-issuing the David Susskind show, East Side / West Side on dvd and came across this soundtrack recording. When I was 13 a local television station was rerunning the show late on Saturday nights and I managed to watch nearly every episode. I loved the grittiness of the show and efforts at presenting difficult material in as realistic a way as possible given the needs of dramatic flow. The soundtrack, while fairly generic in style, nevertheless did remind me of the exciting cosmopolitanism that the show held for me.

Great TV soundtrack by Kenyon Hopkins sounding better than ever.
Ah, East Side, West Side - those of us who had the Columbia LP knew how much fun it was and oh that Columbia stereo was simply unsurpassed. So, even though this is a CD-R, it's so great to have it and sounding so good, too, fresh as a daisy. I'm a fan of Mr. Hopkins and this album is a treat.

Superb Hopkins Score
This television classic was greatly enhanced each week by Kenyon Hopkins first-rate jazz score. I still own the original LP release, but it's wonderful to have the CD copy now.

jazz-flavored musical accompaniment for one of television's finest dramas.
The brevity of the original album, now heard on this CD, does not diminish its substance and beauty. Mr. Hopkins wrote exciting, jazz-flavored musical accompaniment for one of television's finest dramas.

If series not available, at least the soundtrack is.
I wish the actual series was available on DVD. It was the cool jazz of the sixties.
