The trademark sole, distinctive stitch detail, and sleek leather construction perfect this iconic oxford. Dr. Martens is the stuff of legends. It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On the first of April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460. To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history.

Breaking in was strangely easy
I'm a size US 7 in practically everything with fairly narrow feet. After hearing conflicting information about fit, I ordered both a size 6 and 7 just to be safe. In the size 6, my feet fit perfectly, but my toes touched the front wall, and the rear lip dug into my achilles. In the size 7, I could fit an entire index finger behind my heels.I opted for the size 6 pair, despite being uncomfortable at first and despite hearing patent leather would be much stiffer and less likely to stretch out. Why? Because I hate thick socks and never wear them, that's why. I refuse to change my lifestyle to my shoe, and I was determined to break the stubborn spirit of these shoes and force them to conform to me.I decided to go the hairdryer route, because it's proven successful for me in the past. I blasted the shoes with warm air, inside and out, for about a minute. I then put on three pairs of winter socks and jammed my feet in and hobbled around my house for an hour. Did it work? YES, IT DID. Width-wise, they had much more give. Length-wise, not a huge difference. Still, I’m so glad I stayed with the 6. I’d read all kinds of reviews about how it took months for people to break these puppies in, but I've had them for a week and I've already walked a few miles in them. Unfortunately, I do still need to place sheer bandaids on my heels and thin socks over that, but it's been a week! I'm pretty positive they'll be custom-shaped to my feet in no time.I feel stupid for not having bought these sooner. Aesthetically, they are unmatched if you want the look of a classic, edgy brogue. The welt-stitching is immediately recognizable, and the patent is shiny and doesn't crease very easily. They make the lamest outfit look so badass and I am obsessed with them.TL;DR: If you have narrow feet like me, I'd go down a full size. If you have wider feet, I'd still size down and consider the fact that the leather loosens a bit and you can also lace less tightly. If you wear thick socks year-round, you're weird but anyway stick with your true size. If you're neurotic about it no matter what you read, just order two sizes and return one.

Great quality
My daughter intended to return them for another style, but it soon as they were delivered she tried them on and fell in love. They are a bit stiff and will need some breaking in but absolutely flawless cute shoes.

Love the shoes, definitely break them in first
I love these shoes! They're very cute on, and the breaking in process was much easier than I expected. I definitely recommend the hairdryer method. Blast the inside and outside of each shoe with a hairdryer for about a minute and then immediately put them on with double socks and walk around the house with them on for about an hour. They have a lot more room to give than you think! I did this and then went on a date immediately after and they were very comfortable. I did wear band aids around my heels just in case, but th shoes were very comfortable. I can tell with the quality that they're going to last a long time too. I absolutely love these and the fact that you can dress them up or down for just about every occasion!

half size too big
Been wanting these for years. I'm a true size 6 and this was a half size too big. If I put a thicker insole in, the top of my toes will press against the inside of the shoe and definitely get blisters. I tried wearing two socks but still would rather not go through the hassle. The shoes were comfy but maybe that's because it was a bit too loose. I tried the non patent leather version which felt more stiffer/ painful, but it was still half size too big. Sad to be returning them.

I wish I discovered Dr. Martens' sooner!
Love my Dr. Martens! Please be aware of sizing as it can be miss leading. I wear a women's size 6 1/2 US normally and the 4/6/37 fits super with a wee bit of room to spare. I wore them a few hours no socks at home to discover "hot spots". Then I rubbed some shea butter inside where they pinched a bit. I did find they rubbed my heels and used band aides for a few days to avoid blisters. I am on my feet all day 8-5. No problems here with these. Yes they can be tricky to size and break in. I work in a bank with a professional dress code and these look great with slim pants to pants suits, with a little fun edge.

Love love love
I get so many compliments on these bad boys. 😍 I just love them. I work at Starbucks and needed a sturdy shoe after a year of wearing Target brand boots there. These are practical and fashionable! And great when it’s cold.
