Robert Monroe, The Review
This book puts things into perspective for me. Some appear to be critical of Monroe, but this is good to see, it shows that everyone has well work to do and not everyone is perfect. The areas that I were struck by was Monroe's own decision to shut down his own OBEs after making contact with Nancy. Monroe believed the love was so intense that he had to literally shut that down. However, when one experiences that at his age, the joke I think was Robert was older like an old timer when he was really getting the answers, then well he isn't going to want to stay around. There's even a point where Monroe remarks he is alone and has no friends toward the end of his life, accept it appears the intervention of another fixes him up. It's scenes like these that make Monroe harder to fake and possibly make it real.Monroe understood the basics his exploration was more about meeting people and seeing what might happen working together, that's more or less the journey and the sum of it all. This what's rather sad hearing well recordings of explorers so trusting and open and you can sense that in the person, its something I'm afraid is going to be ruined with man's development. Accept, being honest would one really wish to be part of something moving forward that is going in an unbearable direction? I don't think so. I don't see how something with positive Earth changes can just remake everything after all the horrible things that might happen in the horizon, it just means people continue to be complicit and should know better, paving over the environmental carnage and the bloodbath for the new and improved run down hotel afterlife. We also aren't even considering more environmental factors such as a blue ocean event, which would catastrophically destroy the planet, following Monroe's reasoning it just means you are a resource to another addict. It can be for love as New Age says, but ultimately, if true it just means the means to get there was evil since the start. There is in some cases some sadness in what Monroe says. Monroe's mother supposedly incarnates to solely work on music and others simply do it so they can have a family this time. In a way, that's what's rather terrifying for me to watch sort of a procession unfold where everything is permanently destroyed and can I say it would be worth it? I don't think so its a massive disappointment, more of a permanent scar that will be permanently there. So with that there is some honesty and integrity in the biography with him at least. That doesn't mean that what surrounds the narrative of an other worldy variety is too trust worthy. One has to find out for themselves at the very least. It will become known in time.

An Inferior Biography of a Superior Human
It is wholly unfortunate to have a contemporary biography of a mind and spirit, such as Robert A. Monroe's, be written by such an average mind and spirit. As Monroe said we do the best we can. Not only is Ronald Russell simply unable to to grasp the magnitude and comprehensiveness of Monroe's work, but he's also, sadly, put his own interpretations on it, making them not only small, but in many instances false. If you did not read Monroe's work first, I would not recommend this book as any kind of introduction. Read Monroe's books yourself and make your own conclusions. What saddens me the most is that the awesomeness of Monroe's work was reduced to so little by being run by an average, trivial, small mind. It would be great to see a biography of Monroe by someone who really gets his work, its implications and gets Monroe. Ronald Russell's The Journey of Robert Monroe is, for the most part, an inaccurate, narrow presentation of the life and work of Robert A. Monroe.

Not a Guru, Just an Interesting Guy
I watched some videos of Robert Monroe on Youtube and was curious to know more about him. This book answered all my questions, and then some. Here are some excerpts from the book:"In recent decades, consciousness has come to the fore as one of the great problems confronting Western science and philosophy. The attempt to explain consciousness has developed into a sort of academic business, with professorships and lectureships accumulating and publications multiplying year after year." (p. 338)"Monroe's reading did not include books on the scientific study of consciousness. His conversational approach in his writings and talks is devoid of the weighty vocabulary of academia. He was an explorer, not a theorist, and, certainly to begin with, he had no clear idea as to where his explorations might lead. [...] It took much courage to move forward, leaving security and certainty behind." (p. 347)The biography is objective and deals frankly with some of Monroe's less admirable personality traits. On the negative side, the writing is not great.

The back story of a remarkable man...
This book, written after Monroe's death, is much more informative than Stockton's Catapult - the first biography of Monroe written in 1989. Russell writes that he is much indebted to Stockton for information about Monroe's career and family life. Russell takes the narrative further by writing about the inner workings of the Monroe Institute and the development of Hemi-sync. He share more of Monroe's vision as well as his many struggles. I read this book after I read Monroe's "journey" trilogy - and this book gave me the back story - about a remarkable man who was not a mystic, but a pioneer in out-of-body travel to other dimensions of consciousness. Along with the books I've mentioned in this review, I also highly recommend Eyes of an Angel by Paul Elder.

Useful Elaboration
This book provides background and explanatory information helpful in understanding Robert Monroe's writings. The first few chapters are difficult to get through, as the information on Monroe's family (especially the name changes) isn't clear. The rest of the book provides useful information supplementing and clarifying the history of the Monroe Institute and the personal characteristics of Robert Monroe that tended to reduce his effectiveness and that of the institute. I would recommend reading Monroe himself before tackling this, as the ambiguity and inconsistency here gets in the way of understanding the original work.

Good biography.
I have read the three books written by Robert Monroe and reading this book gave him more credibility in my view. Some of his "out of body " explorations and their descriptions can seem a little beyond belief but this biography helped me understand him as a pioneer and thoughtful researcher in the field.
