Good workmanship and really works well.

Works fine, a bit cheaply built
It works fine. Expect some grinding on the brass finish as you open and close

BAD build quality. Sections are loose and wobble around making it almost impossible to see through.
The thread between the cap and the telescopic section are not even the same size, they used some garbage glue to get it to stay. The sections are loose, they wobble, and since they wobble the light path isn't straight so you cant see through it. The lenses inside are mounted in plastic housings that really look as if someone remolded plastic they dug out of the garbage. I mean... seriously. The people reviewing this positively are know nothing soccer moms who think its pretty. (it doesn't look bad by the way... in the box... before you try to use the thing) DONT buy it.

Not disappointed - Was way better than expected
So I failed to actually pay attention to what I was buying but it worked out in my favor. I was so excited about the telescope I failed to see the cute wooden box. I was impressed with the wonderful craftsmanship of the box alone and then I opened it to find the telescope had the beautiful woven leather on the main handle portion (Not sure if it is real leather but I'm painting a picture here...lol) For the price I paid, the look of it alone was worth it, plus the box. My dad was fascinated by it for five minutes and played around with it but couldn't get it to focus; which I had read others struggled with in other reviews so I wasn't disappointed. My brother then took it and realized we hadn't opened it up enough, we only opened it to the third portion not the fourth. Once we opened it all of the way it worked! haha It's such a cute item. We are using it for a photo prop so didn't really care if it worked or not but was so worth the money. My nephew is obsessed with pirates too so once we're done with the photos I will make sure to package it nicely and pass it along to him. He will be thrilled.(The lighting in my photos don't do it justice....don't worry, I'm not the photographer for the photos we purchased this for haha)

The ultimate pirate accessory!
Please note that I'm not reviewing this, necessarily, as a precision optical instrument. I'm reviewing this as a gift for my 4-year-old godson. He's big into "Jake and the Neverland Pirates." When I stumbled across this thing for $20, I thought that I'd give it a shot and see what I'd get. I was blown away - this is a "real" brass telescope; it has a sewn leather cover on the larger end tube, too. It has a beautiful wooden case with brass inlays in the corners and a brass inlaid anchor on the top. I can tell you that, in every way, it was the coolest thing he had ever seen, when he opened it.Some aspects of the quality were mediocre - the inlays weren't perfectly recessed and box was too large to tightly the fit of the telescope. But, for $20 - as a gift for a 4-year-old, it was perfect. It works, too, as a telescope, allowing, I'd estimate 4-6x magnification. Focus is adjusted by moving the lens tubes in and out. The telescope comes packed in Styrofoam, inside of the box, which, despite my efforts to remove it, left some Styrofoam "crumbs" that I couldn't get out. The telescope has some heft to it - it was light enough that the kids could hold it up, but it definitely has the mass of a brass tube.If you're looking for precision optics, look elsewhere; if you're looking for something that is true to the look and feel of an old nautical telescope, I don't think this could be beat at $20.

Actually a REAL spyglass
So everyone is COMPLAINING how objects are not in focus when you look thru the spyglass. Guess what...IT NOT SUPPOSE TO BE IN FOCUS!!!! Stop complaining an show your child how to operate a simple spyglass. The ones that complain I guess have never looked thru a telescope, microscope or binoculars. ALL of these you have to adjust to focus correctly to YOUR EYE. I have a 3yo that took about 3 times me showing him how to focus and now he does it on his own. Its not rocket science. This spyglass is like the real thing. Probably the same power as the pirates had in the days of old. It is all brass. The brass, as with ANY brass, will tarnish. This is a toy what will last as long as your child keeps track of it. I would recommend this to any pirate or scallywag. And the price is perfect. Looked that the smaller ones but I dont think they would have been as good as this one. I bought several items, treasure map, compass, gold deblooms (plastic) and a pirate pouch. This was the first to arrive out of all. And within a couple of days of purchase. Very satisfied with everything about this seller and item.Thank you and my pirate thanks you.

Item Different In Picture 1. The telescope I received ...
Item Different In Picture1. The telescope I received was indeed only in three sections, and not four as indicated by the picture. And it's about a foot long. I see that other reviewers have said the same thing. What do you have to do to bring this to Amazon's attention.2. However, it works perfectly well, just as some--but not all--reviewers have claimed. I can only wonder whether or not other people received something different, or if perhaps they don't know how to use a telescope. You want a little distance between your eye and the eyepiece, and you slide the tubes back and forth to adjust the focus.3. I was more impressed with its magnification than I thought I'd be. I don't know how to judge focal length, but I can say that with the telescope I could read the words on a sign at 100 yards that I couldn't make out with it. More powerful than opera glasses, at least.4. There's something about using a telescope that makes people smile at you.

Looks Good and Actually Works
It looks nice and comes in a nifty wooden box with an anchor on it, Unfortunately, I initially gave a bad review because I couldn't get it to focus - however I realized that I wasn't extending it correctly and it actually focuses just fine.

Not safe for Childern
I don't think the metal/coating used on this product is safe for children or any human. They are sticky, smells like Lead. I suspect it uses Lead.

Disappointed
The advertisement for this scope says nothing about it being a "toy". When it came we were disappointed to see on the box that it said "toy". When we opened it, it looked ok, but we couldn't see anything through it. It stayed blurry whether we extended it or not. We were very disappointed and sent it back...I hope we get our refund and don't face another disappointment.
