The Female Hitler Youth
The topic of the female branch of the Hitler Youth is often overlooked by historians and this book addresses that deficiency. The coming of age stories during the years of the Reich are rich in contextual history and the development of the JungMadel (German girl scouts) and the BDM (for teen girls up to 19) are very well researched. It is a 3-5 hour read as it is only 256 pages and there is some filler information (for perspective?). The chapter on Hitler and his "girls" is pure nonsense that often gets printed these days though there is no evidence. Other than that the book was a good read. A warning that the last two chapters deals with the brutal rapes and murders that Soviet troops subjected the civilian population to graphically. The transformation of these young women into combat units highlights the courage and tenacity of the female German youth. This review is for the Kindle edition.

Interesting memories about life on the German home front. It confirms another level of Nazi organization, vicious tactics, and manipulation among the youth. It also provides a good idea of what life was like for those who had to endure Hitler, and invasion and bombing by the US, Brits, and USSR. The grotesque performance of Soviet forces is not matched by similar description of atrocities committed by the Nazi's in the east so the book, might mislead the otherwise uninformed.about reasons/excuses for some of the brutality at the end of the war... .

Interesting and easy to read
All societies have ideas concerning girls and the fact that they give birth to the next generation. It shows how dangerous it was for the young to dishonor their parents and put their faith in organizations that promoted disrespect for the older generations and the teaching that they were better.

SB//239 pages//flat white paper//6x9.25//25 BW photos. This is one of those books you can place yourself in their shoes. Its more like a diary of the girls experiences than a history of the organization. I went through it in two days. If anyone thinks that girls and women do not have a tough time involved with any government anywhere, they are sadly mistaken. This will show you the sad truth. Highly recommended. 15 chapters.,,,jim

I would have LOVED to have given this book five stars, but ...
This is an amazing piece of work, and so interesting for amateur 3rd Reich historians to have so much information from a part of the society then that no one has bothered much about. I was hugely impressed by, and carried into that era with these women who, as girls, fell hook, line and sinker for the Hitler Youth myth. Beautiful looking girls, some of them, too, sporty, athletic and devoted to their country and their Fuhrer.Sadly, however, the book is horribly badly written. There are appalling grammatical errors, the author mixes his tenses - sometimes in the middle of a sentence - in the most irritating way and the punctuation is all over the place. Moreover he depressingly often starts and ends a sentence with the same words!Back in the days when I was writing books I had a razor sharp editor who would have dived in with the proper corrections immediately. With no disrespect I wonder if the glaring mistakes are because it is an American publication and their rules about grammar, care with spelling and word meanings, (there is a big difference between wandering and wondering) and confusing punctuation is the result of that.Far and away the best bits of the book are the memories of the ladies themselves - even if they do need some correction. The historical chapters are nothing like so good. The chapter about Sophie Scholl read more like a collection of notes waiting to be moulded into a proper chapter and was very confusing in places. Finally, the author needs to check up on his history. When he first introduces Geli Raubel he suggests that she moved into Hitler's apartment in Munich with her two children - when she was in fact one of those two children; her mother was the housekeeper. And there is a line which suggests the whole of the 3rd Reich was jealous of Eva Braun when she moved into the Reich Chancellery with Hitler in 1939. She was living at the Berghof in 1939, and no one knew she existed at that time! And lastly, the author should be more careful about Hitler and sexual matters. There was a lot of rather spiteful propaganda written about Hitler by the British and by the Americans, and none of it was ever proved to be a fact. This book suggests he was leaping in and out of bed with endless pretty women - however, one of his butlers from the Berghof actually said, in a television documentary, that Hitler and Eva never shared a bed and whenever he came to change the sheets there was never any sign that anything had occurred between them in either his or her bed. These are things best left to history, not written about in such a way as to imply implicit truth in the allegations.

This book is an amazing piece of work
Just WOW, This book is an amazing piece of work, a real eye opener into parts of our history that I feel has been heavily censored over the years. It makes me realise how the people of Germany were influenced and to the saturation of propaganda through out the young lives of these girls. It also makes me think that how would I react if it was a child of mine as well as not having any control over what happened to my child,This is a book although sensitively written and showing a raw untold side of history that we would never be taught in school, very though provoking. How the author has put this together I think would make a superb unabridged TV series.
