Aesop's Fables (Signet Classics)

Good pictures, lots and lots of stories! My husband and I want to instill my stepson with good morals and values, so my husband really likes getting this book. It’s in a stocking as we speak

Inciteful. Ancient wisdom.

I tutor ESL, working with a woman from Mexico. I was surprised to learn she had never heard of these Fables, so I bought her the book. She has a 9 year old son who was born in the US, and thus speaks English as his first language. They read the stories together, and are both enjoying the experience. He helps her if she doesn't know a word. I then have her tell me what she read when we meet the next time. This method has been a good way for her to learn English, become familiar with classic stories, and share an experience with her son.

While I do not necessarily agree with the "wisdom" of some of these fables, a few of which warn people of the dangers of taking risks in life and opting for safety and security (which we all know do not exist in this world in reality), I did enjoy reading most of them. I seem to be easily amused by animals interacting with one another. As a child, I dispensed with the serious "lessons" illustrated by these quaint little tales and enjoyed the fables as cartoons. As an adult re-reading it I still delighted in the cartoonishness, but also pondered some of the fables' messages. It is an amusing classic that doesn't require much in the way of intellectual commitment. These pithy fables are masterpieces of editing, each of them very brief and to the point. Overall, I enjoyed this every bit as much as re-visiting Grimm's Fairy Tales and Hans Christian Anderson's collection of fairy tales. Bottom line? It's fun! And besides, how do we know that a mouse whose life was once saved by a kndly lion did not at some point return the favor? Maybe animals help each other or deceive each other all the time just like humans. It's harmless fun to consider such possibilities. This book will tickle the child inside you.

A timeless collection of fables, one cannot but endorse its utility in instruction and the development of critical thinking. This edition contains a decent use of vocabulary which can be helpful when reading to children. The illustrations left something to be desired, though as these fables began in oral tradition and are still appropos for reading aloud, this was not a crucial fault.

Very pleased! A gift for a friend & elementary school teacher who loved it. A small but not too small book, approx 6" tall by 4" wide & about 1" thick. I thumbed through some of the short stories before gifting it and almost wanted to keep it for me! Very good classic fables.

Childhood fable that make you a better adult. I loved Aesop's Fables as a child, my mom & teachers read them to me. They have morals that encourage a better humankind. In this day & age of Internet runned society & lacking morals. Kids today could benefit from a Lil story of friendship from "Ashanti the Spider".

I had to have this book for a Folklore class and this was the best book that I used in that class. I read the whole thing in one day and have referred back to it often. The book quality itself is great and the writing inside is even better.

Will read a number of times to learn the language and writing style. No pictures, no cartoons, suitable for readers of older age.

As per the price says, its worth buying. And for the book, its always fine. Very short and concise moralistic stories for children but for me, i wouldn't give this to my own children as i find it dumbing down the real intellectualism in kids. Its sort of like toys for public school children in India. Good book though.
