Not for chisels!
Look carefully at the included photos. You will see a misalignment in the chisel holding surfaces. Gripping a narrower (1/2") chisel is difficult to keep it flat against the bars. I think the geometry of the casting is causing the blade to cant up on one side.Maybe I can fix it with some file work, but I would suggest that anyone else just spend a few bucks more and get a better quality tool.

Honing guide for chisels and plane irons
Well, first the packaging was horrible - the bubble envelope was intact but the cardboard box was all smashed up and the product was not in the box anymore, no damage done I do not believe.Getting to the honing guide - when moving in and out, it is stiff, as if there is a messed up thread or the bolt is slightly bent. Nothing major - just not smooth. I ran it in and out about 30 times and it did get better but still not smooth.IT does have the 2" offset for 25 degrees and the offset for 30 degrees which is a plus.over all it is fine - I have another older one that seems to be a little better but I will uses this a couple of times and see if it loosens up a bit

A well made sharpening jig
The angle you will produce with this is entirely related to how accurate you can measure how much tool is sticking out the front, while trying to hold it in the proper position in the jig (the instructions give distances down to the hundredth of an inch). It can be a little clumsy, and trial and error prone, but the results are awesome. I may try to build some sort of measuring jig for this so I can replicate the perfect 25 degree angle.

does not handle all chisel configurations
the device looks good and sturdy. The clamping of the chisel works fair on some chisels and not at all on others causing the chisel not to be sharpened with a square edge. Also only chisels with a long blade can be held at the proper angle. Chisels that do not have a sharp edge along the blade can not be held securely in the device. I have to look for another one at this time. On the other hand it does an excellent job on my planer blades except for my very short one. Also the screw to tighten the blades requires a tool to tighten it, a stubby screwdriver works fairly well but a better solution would be a custom designed hand tool.

Great for sharpening
I got my chisels shaving sharp with this. The angle you’re supposed to use is on the little chart that comes with it but didn’t work with my Stanley chisels so I eyed up the angle and let it rip. There is a little groove where the chisel is supposed to fit but only one of my six chisels actually fit in the groove- no big deal, just made sure they were clamped down square and true and got to grinding. This isn’t a precision sharpening system but with a very minimal amount of care during set up, you are able to get things very sharp. I bought it because it is a cheap fast solution and I’m very happy with it. I would still like a 1K Japanese wet stone sharpening system but, this little guy will help me make the stuff to sell to get me the money to buy it.

It has one job
and it doesnt do it well. The paint is so thick that the chisel/plane iron doesnt sit flat. So you will get an angle on the edge that is not 90 to the side. I got an old stone from harbor freight that I used to flatten the saddle. Again its not fool proof and its easy to not get a perfectly coplanar bed to the bearing. Like I said, one job to do. Then again you get what you pay for. Its not a veritas but I would think its relatively easy to machine things to a reasonable accuracy. disappointed.

Plane irons only
It works pretty well for plane irons, but chisels don't fit properly in their intended slot. I tried several brands and sizes of chisels and none of them worked. You can use the mortise chisel area for regular chisels but it's awkward and doesn't feel secure. I might be able to file the slot a bit to make chisels fit better but I haven't tried yet. Also, there's no provision for small blades like my tiny 2" plane iron and my spokeshave blade.

Great jig!
I like the design of this tool. I only wish I had known of this decades ago!
