I was surprised when I got this because it looks so flimsy that I thought it was not going to work. But it not only works well, it is as easy as counting to 3 to use. The directions were not easy to read, but it is very intuitive to use, so I just tried it out, and I love the results.It not only makes a nice, large digital copy of your slide, it also can change the lighting so you can get darker slides to look good in the digital copy. And it copies directly to an sd card (I bought one--doesn't come with), so you can use it in your computer to modify or resize. It does come with a cable to attach to a computer, but I prefer to have my photos on an sd card and use them that way, so I didn't try the cord yet.It makes the copy in just a few seconds! You can go through a stack of slides in just minutes, and you have them all ready to modify or print that fast. I have not used the negative copier yet, but I probably will. So even though it looks flimsy, it works like a charm and is worth every penny if you have a bunch of digital photos you want from slides or negatives.I can't rate the durability yet because I have only had it a few months, but I may add something later if I need to.

Note that this is NOT a scanner. This nifty piece of equipment takes a digital image of slides (or negatives). The average scan time for an 80-slide carousel was about 30 minutes. Don’t expect great quality in the images and do expect to spend time using photo-editing software to perfect the “scanned” images. If you end up wanting even small format prints (i.e. 4x6) you’ll want to copy directly from the slides. That being said, the quality is good enough for sharing decades of wonderful memories and it will give you and your family digital images that can be enjoyed by all and will preserve them in case something catastrophic happened to the original slides.PROS: 1) Easy to use. 2) The slide adapter seems pretty flimsy, but it’s remarkably sturdy and it functions well. 3) Adjusting the color saturation (especially for red) worked better than I thought it would. 4) The unit reminds you to insert an SDHC card which is very helpful.CONS: 1) The brightness control doesn’t always work. 2) There is an internal 2013 date that can’t be changed, so if you use an SDHC card for saving images this “system” date will be on all of your images. What this means is if you use Shutterfly (for example), it will put your uploaded images on your 2013 timeline instead of on your 2017 timeline. This is irksome at best. 3) The “Flip” setting doesn’t reset after you flip a slide image, which I didn’t figure out until l I had scanned and uploaded about 30 slides. The first one was backward, so I flipped it not knowing that setting would “stick.” This resulted in the remaining slides being scanned backwards which I didn’t catch until I had uploaded them to my laptop.One more note about adjusting the brightness: As another reviewer stated, “Blown out slides will still be blown out.” I agree. Using the brightness controls to adjust the contrast for these will only make a darker “blown-out” image. You can brighten dark slides to some degree, but I found that the setting didn’t work very often.All in all, this is a quick and easy way to digitize thousands of slides (which is what I’m doing). TIP: Use the included dust-remover wand often to clean the glass!

I was surprised at how well this worked and how fast and easy. With a shoebox of negatives to scan, I figured I would give it a shot, half expecting to return it. I didn’t even realize the brand name was Magnasonic instead of Magnavox until a dub after I got it, so I was not expecting much. I’ve now had it for about a week and scanned in about 1500 negatives. The speed is amazing considering what it’s like using a flatbed scanner to scan photos. You can slip in a negative and go through the 4 photos in seconds. It actually takes about 3 seconds to scan each photo/negative. Click click slide. Repeat. That’s it. I haven’t had to adjust the color on many photos, but occasionally the whole roll of film will have a color cast to the pictures and using the settings to tweak it a bit saves a lot of post-processing time. I will say that you definitely have to be careful and proactive about keeping it dust free. Every few negatives I’ll give that internal glass a wipe with that lint brush that’s included. One little fiber and you’ll have a line on all your photos. One downside that I found is not really a fault of the scanner but just something to be aware of that takes extra time. Some film processors attached paper strips to the negatives. Those need to be removed before scanning as they don’t fit in the bracket. I’ve also scanned in several color slides and was just as happy. They take a little longer as you have to place each one in the bracket separately, but that actual scan still takes 3 seconds. All results are of course very dependent on the quality of the original photo. Clear sharp negatives look amazing even when zoomed in. Slightly blurry or over/under exposed photos might be disappointing when viewing them on a PC, but if you view the, smaller they should be as good as a print. Overall, I couldn’t be happier. Using this with google photos to sync all my pictures to the cloud means I have a great archive of my family photos and access to them from anywhere. Other items to note: Scans are in jpg format. No raw images. Internal memory holds less than 40 photos but using an SD card instead more convenient and holds hundreds or more depending on the size. I saw somewhere in a q&a from the seller that you could scan movies by grabbing each frame and then using software (not included) to convert the still images to a moving picture. That may be possible but would probably take forever. They should just say no, it just takes still images off movie film. Lastly, if you load the negative wrong, you can flip and mirror the image with a quick click, but it’s often difficult on the tiny screen to tell if the images is flipped left to right (mirrored). You may end up needing to fix those later on a PC. I’m sure if you look at the coding on the negative you can load them right each time.

I have had this product for a few weeks, and have been scanning decades of negatives onto a digital archive. In that time the Magnasonic Sanner has been very intuitive and simple to use (I save to an SD card, copy to a MacBook Pro and then back up to a LaCie Rugged external drive). With 22MP the scans are optically clear and have enough data to allow for large prints and detail. The scan quality is not as good as a photographic print, although it is close and I can edit the scans reasonable well. The big benefit is how quickly the device scans, allowing me to get through a sleeve of negatives in a few minutes. Other methods I have used take much longer, and don't necessarily produce a better quality image.The enclosed accessories are rugged and fit well, taking a lot of the guess work out of scanning the negatives and slides.Dust is an issue and it's important to keep the screen spotless or you will notice the dust on your scans. the scanner does come with a cleaning brush that does the job, so no external cleaners are required.

Reasonable quality at a respectable price. Does what I was expecting.

Bought this for scanning old family negatives - have a good Epson that I use for photos but there is a bit of a learning curve when it comes to negatives and I wanted something a little simpler to use. Have used it several times now and am happy with the result, you just need to be aware of its limitations. The scanner won't do any sort of colour correction or clean-up of the negative so the results may be a little faded or off colour (negatives can "fade" like old pictures) but was able to use a basic Windows photo program with colour correction to restore those. Also, you will lose some of the image around the edges - not a lot but there will be some. That is the main reason for 4 stars overall as it would have been nice if they scanned a little larger even if it meant seeing the holders since it that is something you can crop out yourself. But otherwise it works quite well. My understanding is that this isn't a true scan, more that it is taking a digital picture of the negative but the results are actually really good. The images are pretty clear and I was able to zoom in quite a bit before it started to pixelate. And it is quick to use, only takes a few seconds to take the image and since you are pulling the negative through the scanner you can literally do a strip of film in 30 seconds. Have used it for both 35mm and 110 color film and it worked fine on both. If you are looking for high end archival scanning of negatives, this isn't for you but if you are looking for something to do a decent job of scanning old family negatives then this is something to consider.
