This wonderful and thorough book offers a brief history of the liquor store business, how it has changed over the years, and, before the author really gets started, he offers thorough information about all levels of licensing so the audience can “know what they are getting into” by opening a liquor store business, yet he speaks of “get into” part cheerfully. It’s just about knowing he seems to explain. There, too, is information about how to define the environment, the immediate neighborhood for the liquor store, the surrounding neighborhoods and the community. Then quickly things get exciting because he explains how this is the kind of business you can expand to owning more than one liquor store business once you open the first one and learn the trade. Next he suggests and argues how there will always be a market for a liquor store business because of celebrations and parties all have. The thorough book has information on regulations and demographics that you can apply to your specific situation, and encourages you through statistics showing that more than one liquor store is needed in a neighborhood. Next is detailed information about financing, how to secure the money to open a liquor store, and he narrows this down to eight detailed steps. More information, once you get through these eight steps, is how to create a business plan. He warns you about the possible downfalls, not things you may happen to you before you unknowingly find out about them, but knowing insights on what to avoid beforehand. From that knowledge, it is easy to see why his directions make total sense. What would be the most fun for me is what comes next: information about the products to buy that will ultimately be better than what is offered in the local grocery store. Finally, he sends you on with fun and great marketing ideas!

I truly believe that Jack Tillman’s “How to Start, Run, & Grow a Successful Liquor Store Business” is necessary reading for anyone even contemplating opening this type of store. The book is very easy to read and understand. It feels like you’re having a conversation with Jack and that he’s answering all your questions on the subject. Jack pulls no punches in discussing the pitfalls of such a business and discusses everything you need to do to avoid them, from budgeting and finance to developing a business plan. The book also talks about naming your business, incorporating it, and the equipment you will need. Marketing, pricing and even doing a grand opening are discussed as well. I found the book to be very interesting and informative and would purchase it again. It’s definitely worth your time.

Jack gives good basic information to help early entrepreneurs think about all of the costs and complexities of starting a retail liquor business. Would have like to have seen a detailed sample business outline that provides more context regarding starting a retail establishment. I do like the fact that he’s not a professional motivator/writer and appears to be someone who genuinely likes helping others.

I saw this book when it was on free promotion and didn't think much when I downloaded it. However, after going through it, I must say, this is a well-written guide for anyone looking to get started on a liquor retail business. We have been thinking about starting a small retail business and now I think I want to explore more about the idea of a liquor store for sure. The process seems simple enough, but as the author says, location, location, location. That is the first thing I need to look and find. One truly informative guide for sure.

This is a great book to start with to wrap your head around everything involved in starting a liquor store. Great advice and many things you may not think of until it’s too late. I recommend giving it a read!Scott

I’d love to own a liquor store some day. It’s very difficult to obtain a license as well as costly in my home state, but if I were able to make it happen some day, I would refer back to this book for some help!
