The Apprentice?
Our third installment follows shortly after the events of the previous book. In it, The Great Brain (Tom) finally goes away to the Academy to start 7th grade. His younger brother John (the narrator of the series) decides to take what he's learned as Tom's victim and try to step into his shoes as Tom's replacement as the Con Artiste of Adenville. Unfortunately for John, it turns out that he doesn't have that devious mind that Tom has, so John's schemes tend to run somewhat awry. From the perspective of the overall arc, I like this book quite a bit...it does actually develop Tom's character even though he's largely absent. It shows that, to use a modern cliché, that Tom is a master of three dimensional chess while his victims are often playing checkers (if that makes sense). John in particular quickly finds out that running these schemes requires a certain worldview that John simply doesn't have. This insight, solidified in the fourth book in the series, I think helps foreshadow the events near the end of the series. As with the other books, this is a well written book easily approachable for older elementary school students and above. I'm happy this is still in print so I can introduce my kids to the series at roughly the same age as when I first discovered it. A good series written by an author at the top of his game.

NO PICTURES
I read these books for the first time as a 6th grader over 40 years ago. I have read them many times and as a teacher, I have used them in my classroom. I was glad to see that these books were going to be available on Kindle. I was especially excited when I say the wonderful, detailed artwork on the front covers. I was hoping that the picture in side the books had been redone in the same way as the covers. (They have done this with the Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House books. Needless to say I was so disappointed that not only were the pictures not in color, there were no pictures at all. I wish someone could or would redo the pictures in the books detail and in color like the covers. I also wish someone would make another movie of the Great Brain.

Amazon and kindle suck
I’m only disliking kindle, not the story. The stories are wonderful, but kindle doesn’t include the Mercer Mayer illustrations from the books, and something is lost without them. I’m bitterly disappointed with amazon and kindle

Get the series, they are great, classic children's books
John Dennis Fitzgerald intended to chronicle his youth in Utah for adults, not children. His publisher thought otherwise and the result are these gems. I don't even call them children's lit gems because I find them just as enjoyable as an adult. Before I go on, you should know that Fitzgerald wrote one book about his youth that is for adults, called "Papa Married a Mormon". It is one of the most amazing books on the American west that I have ever read. Sadly, it is out of print, and you may, like me, have to pay an exorbitant sum to get a copy. Trust me, save up and do it. Now back to this book. Every single Great Brain book in the series is pure gold, and the entire set can be had cheaply, so I say buy them all at once. I "put my money where my mouth is" as Tom the Great Brain would say, and bought the lot.

Very pleased, almost used condition!!
This is the third time I have been through the Great Brain series. Once with my pregnant wife and once with my children and now this time with my wife and I for fun. The books are fun and fascinating read. Great stories mixed with a bit of history. You and your children will enjoy them. This book came in mush better condition than expected.

Classic Series - The Great Brain
A classic series - The Great Brain. I read these when I was a kid and recently bought them for a friend's 7 year old. She is an advanced reader and it has been difficult keeping her busy with new reading material that engages her. Pay me on the back! She loves them and is now onto the next one!

A childhood favorite series.
Rereading this to my son. I feel the lack of The Great Brain in this one, and found it mildly less enjoyable to read, less lighthearted. We are looking forward to the next book in the series.

Great
I love these books and so does my 8-year-old son. I would recommend to adults and kids alike - they are really well-written, funny, exciting and the characters really come alive. Set in Utah, which is a place I know very little about, some time during last century. The things the kids get up to are still current and as I say my son is enthralled.

Classic!
These are great books! A must read for every kid! They are hard to find, though. I wish I were able to get more than 3 from this series.
