Capernaum (2018)

The parallel stories of migration and escape alongside the personal struggle are well matched. The combination of the different filming styles matches and complements. Highly recommended!

I'm no stranger to foreign films, and I often am pleased with the offerings, as Hollywood fails again and again to reach a more mature audience. This movie "Capernaum" resonated deep inside of me. It is not a movie that I would call intertaining, but disturbing. It dealt with poverty and over population in one's own family. It dealt with some of the crushing consequences of emigration without documentation. You not only feel the burdens of the young male hero in this story and marvel at his tenacity, as each day of his young life is a constant hustle for survival, but I found myself empathize for his mother and father as well. I'll leave out any mention of the great tragedy in this film, so as not to spoil anything, but for those who aren't afraid to "travel" to otherwise less desirable destinations in the human story, I am recommending this movie, as it made me realize that even my own humble one bedroom apartment makes me very wealthy by comparison.

A boy who has to survive. A tired, hungry child caring for others. Only the tiniest amount of humanity shown from strangers from time to time, but not enough to lift this dear child up out of his circumstance. In a culture where poverty alone doesn't dictate behavior...and being on the make creates victims.If you think you had a bad life - little baby Yonas and his hungry dirty faced companion and caregiver Zain, a child living beyond his years, have it much worse. Zain is fiercely protective of his sister and now of Yonas because at a tender age, he understands what adults are capable of. My thoughts coming away from this film...Be kinder to people less fortunate than ourselves -- in this film, the little (children) people truly are in dire circumstance. Not looking for hand outs, just humanity. The child actor who portrays Zain, is outstanding.

A bit boring

This one was a gritty little movie that seemed more like a documentary. Zain had some parents that really shouldn’t be having children and that’s part of what made this movie work so well. It’s short on humanity but long on resourcefulness and endurance. I can’t say much more without spoilers but it’s not really a feel good movie and though often depressing it hits you like a brick and makes you feel very relieved you’re not in Zain’s shoes.

you mix poverty and ignorance and hopelessness together and then throw children into the mix. the father says that he is who he is because he has never seen any other behavior. the mother was 'married off' at too tender an age herself. the children don't stand a chance of escaping their parents fate. i have experience with that world. i wanted to turn the damn thing off. only the stubborn resistance of the hero kept my eyes on the screen. i never cry....and i cried at the end of the film...the scene when the hero faces the camera. that look on his face is the look of a child feeling hope. great story. great actors. watch and learn and weep.

A Bit Depressing - Even for an Art Film. The acting and photography were fine. The plot with the court case focusing on the neglect of a single child in the middle of a war-torn country where adults are so financially compromised that they can do little to improve their lives lacks plausibility. The film offers up a world of judgment with few solutions. How did the parents get to be this awful and indifferent? For someone that knows nothing about how bad poverty and neglect can be in this world - this might be interesting.

I wanted a DVD-Version so I could share it in my home with my spouse. I tried to watch the movie on my phone but after the first 30 minutes it was a disaster. I watched a tv documentary on the Movie and its producer and was very impressed with the story, to the extent that I immediately pre-ordered . All trace of it has disappeared , sorry.

"Capernaum" ist ein libanesischer Film der Regisseurin Nadine Labaki und erinnert durch das Thema, durch Kraft und Intensität an wunderbare Klassiker wie de Sicas "Fahrraddiebe" oder Rosellinis "Deutschland im Jahre Null".Meisterwerke, die auf der Straße spielen und auch sozial benachteiligten Menschen eine Stimme geben. Und die Figuren des Films befinden sich durchs Schicksal in großer Not und sind noch nicht mal erwachsen. Immerhin hatte der kleine Bruno Ricci in "Fahrraddiebe" ein liebevolles Elternhaus, obwohl die Familie in großer Armut lebte.Der kleine Zain El_Hajj (die Rolle wird von dem syrischen Flüchtlingsschauspieler Zain Al Rafeea gespielt) lebt im Slums von Beirut und möchte nichts mehr von seinen Eltern wissen, seine Mutter beschimpft er als "Monster". Was ist passiert ? Der 12jährige Zain hatte ein besonders gutes Verhältnis zu seiner ein Jahr jüngeren Schwester Sahar (Haita Izzam). Die Familie lebt in Armut und die Eltern Souad (Kawsar Al Hadad) und Selim (Fadi Yousef) sind mit den vielen Kindern heillos überfordert. Daher ist es überlegenswert, dass Kind mit dem interessierten Assad (Nour El Housseini) zu verheiratet. Zain kann das Verhalten seiner Eltern nicht verstehen und haut von zu Hause ab. Er irrt durch die Stadt und lernt auf dem Rummelplatz die äthiopische Wanderarbeiterin Rahil (Yordanos Shiferaw) kennen, die dort als Putzfrau arbeitet und sich illegal im Libanon aufhält. Die Frau lebt in einer Blechhütte hat auch einen kleinen Jungen namens Yonas (Boluwatife Treasure Bankole). Dort kann er vorübergehend unterkommen und während Rahil arbeitet, macht er den Babysitter für den kleinen Knirps. Eines Tages kommt die Mutter nicht von der Arbeit. Sie wurde von libanesischen Behörden festgenommen und ins Gefängnis gesteckt. Irgendwann glaubt Zain, der mit dem kleinen Kind völlig überfordert ist, dass Rahil den Kleinen einfach im Stich ließ. Damit beginnt für die beiden eine Odyssee durch die Straßen Beiruts...Diese Geschichte wird im Rückblick erzählt, denn der kleine Zain hat seine Eltern verklagt, weil sie ihn in die Welt gesetzt haben. Obwohl Kläger befindet sich der 12jährige Junge bereits im Knast, weil diese Odyssee irgendwo damit endete, dass er jemand niedergestochen hat. Vor Gericht verteidigt er seine bestürzende Tat. "Capernaum" heißt übersetzt "Chaos" und dieses Chaos kann der Zuschauer in 126 beklemmenden Minuten mitverfolgen. Die libanesische Regisseurin hat zweifelsohne ein Meisterwerk geschaffen. Beim Filmfestival von Cannes kam zu minutenlangen Standing Ovations und der Film wurde auch als bester fremdsprachiger Film bei den Oscars nominiert. Zum Sieg hat es zwar nicht gereicht, aber hier haben wir es mit einem der besten Filme dieses Jahrzehnts zu tun. Bei einem Budget von 4 Millionen wurde "Capernaum" an der Kasse sogar ein Überraschungserfolg und spielte weitweit 68 Millionen Dollar ein. Das authentische Spiel des kleinen Zain Al Rafeea macht sehr nachdenklich, wie die ganze Geschichte. Sie macht wieder einmal klar, was jeder weiß: Auf unserer Erde herrscht ein ganz großes Ungleichgewicht zwischen Arm und Reich und wir sollten alles mögliche versuchen diese Misere zu verändern.

Aunque Capernaum es una historia ficticia, nada de lo que sucede es inventado, al contrario; todo el resultado es lo que la directora Nadine Labaki vio y experimentó como resultado de visitas a vecindarios, centros de detención y prisiones juveniles.Todos los actores son gente cuya vida real se parece en algo a la película. Para el personaje de la madre de Zain, la directora se basó en una mujer que conoció, quien con sus 16 hijos viven en las mismas condiciones como son retratados en la película. Seis de sus hijos han muerto y otros están en orfanatos por la falta de cuidado. Quien interpreta el papel de Kawthar realmente alimentó a sus hijos con cubos de hielo con azúcar.El film recibió una ovación de pie de 15 minutos en su premiere en el festival de Cannes. Y fue seleccionado para competir por la Palme d'Or en el Festival, donde ganó el Premio del Jurado.En mi opinión, esta debió ser la ganadora del Oscar a mejor película extranjera. Además debieron considerar la actuación del niño Zain Al Rafeea porque de verdad está para romperle el corazón a quien sea.Lastima de una edición de Sony Pictures Classics bastante malita. No tarda en sacarla Criterion Collection, o eso quiero creer.Audio en Arabe y subtítulo en inglés.NO contiene audio ni subtítulo en español.

Nur weil hier großartige und sehr tolle Bilder der Stadt Beirut gezeigt werden und das alles im Großen und Ganzen aufwendig dargestellt und inzeniert ist, ist es noch lange kein Meisterwerk. Sicherlich ein guter Film mit starken Schauspielerleistungen der Kinder, aber es wird krampfhaft auf Drama gesetzt. Der Zuschauer soll unbedingt gepackt und emotional getroffen werden und das merkt man. Das ist zu aufgesetzt dieses Ziel von den Filmemachern. Einmal anschauen reicht. Stellenweise auch sehr langgezogen die Story.

Come lay beside me Kids and I will protect you from the bad things in the world..this is usually what a mother would say to the children she bear.but my goodlord this mother an father of these kids, is like a Bullet to the head. Dam man.you’ll never see another movie on a scale of depravity in your life like this.young Zain, a street wise kid. who has more Guts than his parents decide to take his parentsto court for their “crime” of giving him life. that they themselves don’t know how to parent.this is the slum area of Lebanon, an what you “Need” to do for your survival of chance.I’m going to attempt to tell you, before you complain about your Digital copy that don’t workwith what you have, see this movie. it’s called “Capernaum” (“Chaos”)An Emotional Powerhouse..U Bet.Arabic 5.1 DTS-HD Master. Überwiegend an originalen Schauplätzen gedreht mit Laiendarstellern in den Armenviertel von Beirut.Das ist so was von gelungen. Einfach ganz großes Kino. Übrigens der Titel des Filmes " Capernaum " ist wohl abgeleitet aus dem wohl mal zu Jesus- Zeiten befindlichen Fischerdorf " Capharnaüm " am See Genezareth.Ein großer Film in einen kleinen Land, mit einen tollen Hauptdarsteller.Viel Spass beim Schauen.
