Either the Pod People took my dogs or this book really works
I have two rambunctious beagles who both came to me later in life with pleanty of bad habits, and a few new habits I taught them that weren't so good. In just a few short days of using the techniques in this book I can already see the changes in my dogs. The constant barking at everything outside is fading, they are reliably sitting to go outside and for walks.....just amazing. The best part is nothing in this book is hard, and the dogs seem to like it. The writing is entertaining. The author has a good grip on dogs. I also appreicate his "It's never too late attitude" So many books give up on older dogs.. or just refer you to the leash correction method of dog training for older more challenging pets. This is going to be the book I loan my friends when they get new dogs, replacing some of my old favorites.

Great info, but quite wordy
I LOVE this book. The only reason I gave it four out of five stars, is because it is quite wordy. I bought this book because I have an Alaskan Malamute, and I really wanted to read something from someone who knows a thing or two about training Alaskan Malamutes. Well, I searched high and low for a credible, educated source that knew how the Malamute mind worked before I found this book. I read Cesar's Way, and...well, you try poking (or pinching or whatever it is he does) a Malamute (or a Husky for that matter) when they're being naughty and see if they don't tell you exactly what they think of that :). Sure, alpha dogs and dog packs and exercise, I get that, but I needed TRAINING advice that had been tried on a Malamute before, and guess what? If that's what you're looking for too, you've found it, because Dr. Dunbar has had several Malamutes (he has lots of experience with other dogs, too though, if that's what you're looking for)! It has really helped my dog's training and was worth every penny!

Valuable dog training guide
My husband and I rescued a dog from the street four months ago. He was already one year old and we immediately found out that he had abandonment and separation anxiety, some fear agression issues, and bursts of hyperactivity that was probably why someone dumped him in the park. No one book has all the the answers but Dunbar's method helped build and maintain confidence between us and our dog. The old school "just be the alpha" method absolutely did not work with our dog so we were desparate to find another method. I am very pleased with how my dog has responded to Dunbar's suggestions. He has calmed down 80% and we have found ways to get his attention. My dog really enjoys learning the tricks that Dunbar teaches with simple instructions. The tricks make him focus on the hand signals and the treats (of course) and within a few repetitions he knows what we are asking him to do. I only wish that I had found this dog as a puppy because I think that his off leash training would have been much quicker and more reliable. It has only been 2 months since we began Dunbar's method and the progress has been steady.

Dr. Ian Dunbar Makes Training a Dog Easy & Fun....and it Works!
I bought this book on a recommendation from a friend and I'm glad I did. Prior to bringing my first Black Labrador puppy home I read the entire book in one sitting. Its an easy, informative, and enjoyable read. This book does a great job of explaining how all of the things you do to train your dog are interpreted from his or her perspective. This is really an important thing for a human being to understand because it will make the relationship between you, your family, your friends, and your dog countless hours of enjoyment. Once you understand what makes a dog tick there's no limit to the things you can do and you can do a lot of it without the aid of a book.In the early going of raising your puppy you'll find yourself going back to this book often -- and the good news? It will work!Be persistent. Be Positive. You'll have a great dog that you can be very proud of, and he'll be proud of his or herself, too!

I would recommend
This book is straight forward and basic, yet addresses common problems and how to avoid or solve them. The bottom line is, if you're getting a puppy, expose them to everything very early so they won't be afraid (and bark at) thunderstorms, kids, dogs, cats, strangers etc etc. Also gives tips on avoiding aggression. If your dog isn't a puppy, it's still very helpful. I had a Jack Russell for 15 years and it wasn't until reading this book that I realized all the things I did wrong.

good, practical suggestions
This book is an entertaining and useful puppy guide, and I just got a middle-aged rescue dog who is set in her ways, so a lot of the advice isn't applicable. Still, it's obvious that training a puppy with these principles would prevent a lot of later behavior problems, and a lot of the suggestions will work for any age dog.

Strong Recommend
We bought this book almost 8 years ago for our golden retriever. Over the years people have commented so many times about how well behaved he is. We just got a puppy to join him and are sticking with the same training. At 8 weeks she is already heading in the same direction as her big brother. I recommend this book to everyone we know who gets a new puppy.

If you only read one dog training book, let it be this one.
After over 20 years with dogs this is still THE book. I read loads of training books and all have something to offer but if you only want to read one. Read this one. It gives you an insight on how the dog perceives us and our commands and it gives hands on detailed 'how to do'. This is not the case in all books. Often you get lost in training books as there is a lot of information but no real training procedures. This book gives you both. An absolute must for all dog owners.

Must have for dog owners
Cant praise this book and Ian Dunbar enough!!! everyone should read and get to understand how you dog would see a situation. Makes life so much easier when you can take a step back and view what you are doing from your dogs perspective!!! Fantasticly humane techniques, and proves there really is no need to ever punish your dog, Love it, backs up how i train and all my apparently namby pamby methods!!! and shows that a real qualified expert who not only has years of experience and qualifications is training dogs positively without punishment and getting results, if your getting a puupy or even if you have an older dog that 'wont do as its told' by the end of this book you will have stood yourself in the corner, maybe even slapped your own wrist and started to implement methods and will be seeing how quickly your dog will 'do as its told' as you will now be starting to communicate with your dog in a way he understands rather than taliking a foreign language to him and then blaming hm for 'not doing as he is told'
