The Visual Dictionary of Illustration
APA did a great job with this book. It provides an entry level starting point for the study and history of illustration. There are quick descriptions and brief definitions relating to the arts, illustration, and other relative artists. The book is offered at a fraction of the costs associated with an academic textbook or encyclopedia, yet it would make a good companion to one. A good reference for anyone looking into or just getting familiar with the field, or to touch up as a seasoned practitioner. A shell of vocabulary to refresh and inspire or get one going. However, I gave it a four star because it should be cheaper in price or higher in quality, as far as the quality concerning the lack of information. The price is unfitting in this regard. I would have liked more information crammed in for the cost of a new copy. Although, I did pick this one up used, so I would recommend it for anyone entering the field buying it in this respect. In fact, it should be a starting staple, for it provides a jumping off point to start theoretical and practical research.

A Dictionary with a Twist!
Essentially this is an A-Z of illustration terms with a twist. The illustrated element of the dictionary is a real bonus. The format is excellent, with each inclusion linked to other relevant terms in the dictionary. The illustrations are relevant and the content concise and accurate. It is incredible how much is fitted into such a compact size. The size means it's great for carrying around, and it is a great price too. It hardly seems surprising to use illustrations in a dictionary of illustration, but it is impressive just how slick this dictionary is.
