The Complete Carolan Songs & Airs: Arranged for the Irish Harp

A WORK OF FABULOUS BEAUTY AS WELL AS GREAT SCHOLARSHIP.
Some reviewers have focused on the scholarship that lies behind this major work, and we should not overlook that - but let's not forget the fabulous beauty that runs through the music on the CDs. I've recently also bought a CD of guitar players attempting Carolan's music and while they are skilful musicians doing their best, that CD is just going to gather dust now that I have such a skilful heartfelt musician as Ms Rowsome to lead me through Carolan's heritage. She has made my life richer in a way that few other musicians have managed. I feel real gratitude to her and I've just emailed her via her website to say so - not something I've ever done before. It's true that to get all the tunes written by or attributed to Carolan on the CD she has left out the repeats on many of the tunes. I really hope that she does another CD soon featuring full versions of some of her favourites, perhaps duetting with a pipe or flute player on a few of the tracks. If you're using windows media player to listen to the tracks be aware that on CD 3, from tune 155 onwards, the tune numbers showing on the screen and in the book are out of synch - for example, if you want to listen to Carolan's Receipt you would expect to click on tune number 161 but instead you need to click on tune 163 - or at any rate this is how it is on my machine. CDs 1, 2 and 4 are not effected by this. If you are listening through a CD player then I don't know if this will apply, and if you are simply listening for pleasure then it makes no difference at all.
