Nice Change From Other Black Stallion Stories
The Black Stallion and the Girl had a totally different feel to it than other stories from Walter Farley's Black Stallion series. When a freespirited girl named Pam Athena comes to work at Hopeful Farm, she reminds Alec of what it means to love horses just for who they are. There were several things I really enjoyed about this book. It was an interesting look at women's rights and freespirited people in the 70s, a realistic look at the challenges of horse racing, and it reminded horsemen and women not to lose their first love for horses. There was an innocent sweetness in the book as Pam braided flowers into her horse's mane, danced in the starlight, raced horseback through the forest, and gave a bonquet of wildflowers to Henry. However, what I did not like was the portrayal of Henry. He just didn't seem like the wise, horse loving mentor that he used to be in the previous books. In fact, Pam mentions in the book how surprised she is at his behavior. I also didn't care for the way Alec suddenly needed Pam almost more than his horse. The series is supposed to be about the Black and it seems like Alec kind of loses part of this special relationship with him. Also there are some very sad moments in the book with a racing accident. But all in all, this was a very nice book and I would give it 4.5 stars! ****+

Love Walter Farley and the Black
Got the book fast. Love all the Black Stallion books. Walter Farley did a great job with these. Each book can be read as a stand alone too. One book does not depend on a second book to finish the current story. This one if different because the focus is shifted from Alex to a girl that rides the Black

Excellent Tale of Love & Sexism
There are lessons to be learned from Pam's striving to be taken as an equal in a world of men, but I fear it taught more of sexism than the overcoming of sexism to my 6-year old. The final chapter was also a bit strong for her in terms of its descriptions of their love and parting. I would recommend it for somewhat older readers.

Alex. falls in love, but not with a horse - not a happy ending
Story kept me wanting more, horses featured, especially the Black, but more about people which made a change. I wound recommend this book to anyone who loved horses.I am looking forward to reading more about Pam and Alex
