Your Best Option
UPDATE:My daughter did in fact come home with an active lice infestation. I spent about half an hour going over her head and found 6 lice and 3 nits. To check for lice I used the pointy end of a rat tail comb and systematically checked her scalp in sections of about an inch or two. I figured the more lice and nits I removed ahead of the treatment, the less chance of one managing to escape the gel. This gel was just fine to use and not as slippery and drippy as I remember the lotion being, plus much shorter time frame overall. After 20 minutes, I used handfuls of cheap shampoo and worked it into her hair before trying to wet it. I probably used a good cup of shampoo, and then I did a second lathering (the first go-round of shampoo hardly even lathered after wetting). It came out fine and left her hair feeling very soft! Then I scrubbed the tub well to remove the slippery residue.I had checked at the Hedrin website before deciding how much to buy, and I wish I had bought more. This 100 ml bottle barely covered my daughter's long thick wavy hair. I made sure to get her scalp area very well but I was just barely able to work it down to the ends. Hopefully no lice scurried down there to escape if any had missed my pre-treatment examination. This is what the Hedrin website says:"How much will I need?A little Hedrin goes a long way. The amount needed depends entirely upon the length of hair to be treated. A 50ml bottle should be sufficient for a two-dose treatment of short hair. Longer hair or multiple treatments will require a larger bottle."My recommendation is, if the person's hair is thick and down to the middle of their back, you'll need more than 100 ml for a single treatment of the gel. Possibly the lotion, being runnier, requires less, but the runniness is what makes the lotion potentially less effective (and you have to leave it on for hours).WHAT FOLLOWS IS MY ORIGINAL REVIEW:Disclaimer: I have not yet used this exact product (read on, I'll explain) because my daughter is currently out of the country where she picked up head lice and was treated with who knows what. She wanted me to be ready to check her head and re-treat when she gets back home. I was so delighted to find that I can now order Hedrin through amazon! To explain, when my daughter was younger she got head lice twice and we had fabulous success with Hedrin Lotion (a friend just happened to be traveling in England at that moment and brought it back for us, after I discovered it through my internet research).Since then, Hedrin has been perfecting their product and they now offer Hedrin in a gel form (this product) which had excellent results in clinical trials. Evidently the gel is easier to apply and sticks to the hair and lice better, resulting in a better kill rate in a shorter time. Other than one being gel and the other lotion, they have the same active ingredient and strength. The product title on amazon says 15 minutes and the description says 1 hour. 15 minutes is the latest recommendation, based on actual studies, and that's what's on the box.The bottle I received is from a recently manufactured lot with an expiration date almost 2 years out. I ordered this on a Sunday and found it in my mailbox on a Monday just 8 days later, COMING FROM ENGLAND, even though the expected arrival date was 4 to 6 weeks after my order date. Yay!!In previous dealings with lice, we have used Nix (which is very toxic, stinky, and doesn't kill eggs so has to be done at least twice plus studies are finding very low efficacy because of resistant strains of lice), Cetaphil lotion (google it; I found the smell so nauseating and it so hard to get out of one's hair that I was ready to go back to Nix), and Hedrin lotion (hands down winner).I don't know why the US doesn't come out of the dark ages and license some of the newer treatments that are not toxic. You can buy them in Canada and overseas. And they are not some quack treatment--Canada's health service will pay for them for instance.I have now discovered that here in the US we can buy LiceMD Pesticide Free which is also a dimethicone product. It's licensed as a cosmetic (although it's in the head lice section of the store) which I guess means it doesn't have to go through the more exhaustive FDA approval process for drugs.LiceMD promotes itself just as an aid to nit-combing, but if we need a second lice treatment after the Hedrin, I am going to try LiceMD and see if it seems the same. I have not been able to find what percentage dimethicone it has, to compare it to Hedrin which is 4%. I can buy LiceMD locally as needed which of course is more convenient than sending off to UK. But hey, I was impressed with the delivery, and the gel may be just the ticket. You can search online and find various studies and clinical trials comparing different treatments, their results, and their safety. No product offers 100% because of possible human errors in application--miss one tiny section of hair and there might be an egg left to hatch out--so careful application is very important. This product is very slippery and hard to wash out of hair, but otherwise it is way less objectionable than other treatments. As far as the slippery-ness, just one drop on the floor could cause someone to slip, and you will have to scrub your tub/shower well afterwards to avoid falls. When we used Hedrin before, we had a utility sink for washing it out which was a great option.

Great but even better if used together with lice comb
This is the only treatment that reliably works. However a helpful pharmacist suggested a better method of employing it than what is listed on the box. After application and waiting 15-20 minutes, take your lice combB (the finer the better) and comb the head from roots to ends to remove the bugs and nits, section by section, repeating as necessary. Only then shampoo the stuff out.

like the others
We've had a lice problem in my home for over 10 months. We've tried everything OTC and prescription ( literally EVERYTHING topical and oral) to get rid of them. This product, like the others, claimed to rid us of the lice infestation. Unfortunately, we were unsuccessful yet again. I believe we have an infestation of SUPER BUGS. I have recently started using Purrell Hand Sanitizer daily for 10 minutes, then shampooing and conditioning. Combing out while conditioner in hair. The Purrell treatments have not cured us, but I feel we are "knocking a dent" in the problem. We are able to feel "crawling" and itching like you would not believe. Many say that are too small to feel them crawling around. I beg to differ - perhaps my scalp is just sensitive from all the treatments over the months - but I definitely know now that it's possible to feel them moving. I do not regret using this product, as we have been desperate for anything to work. Unfortunately, we have a case of resistant lice or our infestation is just too severe for this product to work in the quantity we ordered.

Doesn’t work AT ALL!
It didn’t work. Not even a little bit. Waste of money.

People write that it doesn’t work because of the itching after, I thought the same thing but I think it just makes your head itch. It worked for me and I have hair down to my butt.

it looks like I wasted my money on yet another lice product ...
Well I am waiting for mine to come. But after reading the reviews, it looks like I wasted my money on yet another lice product that's does not work! I was so desperate I covered my whole head with vasoline and left it on for two days combing it every few hours! Then I washed my hair and soaked in diluted poroxide, they are gone!

It does give your head some relief but as soon ...
It does give your head some relief but as soon as you wash it out within the hour you can still feel them crawling around. May kill some but certainly not all. Not a 15 minute solution.
