Great for a season.
It was great for a season. Though it's described as saltwater and promises stainless steel, nothing on the device seemed to be what I would consider "marine stainless" and there's no indication of IP68 certification. Within a year had rusted internally and seized up.Very disappointing. I used it for a 20ft sailboat - just a little something to maneuver around the marina and go and come from the slip - I'm in a busy marina with a lot of tourists, novice boaters, first-time paddleboarders, people renting kayaks, etc., so actually sailing in/out of my part of the marina can be dodgy without power. This motor was perfect until it wasn't.

Awsome motor for the money!
Amazing so far. Pushes my 9.4 foot dingy with me and my lady in it and a cooler with no problems. Hooked up 2 100 amp hr batteries in series and it ran for about 3 hours and was still full on charge. Very light and adjustable with quality wires and connections. Comes with a 50 amp circuit breaker as well. I wanna say our speed was at least 6 mph if not more at max although it wasn’t needed all the time.

Plastic control gears WILL fail.
Update: I took the broken handle section apart. There was a broken plastic piece that apparently held it all together. There was also a loose ball bearing and a spring. No idea where they went. After an hour of trial and error I decided to drill a new hole and secure the handle with a bolt. No (poorly designed) telescopic function now, but it works again! -2 stars for engineering, -1 for broken pieces, -1 for my frustration and time. Still 1 star, but I can fish again.Got the 86 pound version for extra power but with portability on my inflatable dinghy. It did a good job for several fishing trips out. Good for tooling on a lake every now and then, but seas are too rough for it. Most importantly, for some reason the gears controlling the speed gave out on the handle. I can barely get it going now, and I have a worse time stopping it. That's dangerous. Ridiculous that they used such cheap plastic on such an important part of the motor! I fear it's basically unusable in its current state. And nothing happened except manufacturing failure. Also, it's a 24-volt system and requires two batteries. That's a lot to lug around if the goal is kayak-style-launch portability. Failed controls means wasted money.

and learned that if I'm easy with it
It's a powerful motor, but it is not a trolling motor. It says on the box that it came in " Electric Outboard". That's what it is. it goes fast, faster, and fastest. for such a powerful motor, it has too much plastic where it should be metal. I used it last week Sept.20,2018. I was trolling in about 10 feet of water, where I had been before. The motor hit a tree limb or something under the water. The teeth that adjust the motor broke. Now the motor is hard to control. That part should have been metal. I went the economical route but now regret it. If you are looking for inexpensive and disposable you might be ok for a while. Mine didn't even last a year. I'll try and find the part for it. But in the mean time I have nothing. I'll stick to the name brands

Zoom, but don't get it wet.
Four months after I ordered this Newport Vessels 86lb trolling motor, I finally had occasion to mount it. I've been using it about a week and wanted to post a review, because Newport Vessels is not a common vendor compared to Minn Kota or Evinrude. I replaced an aging 45lb 12VDC trolling motor (that was still working okay), so it took me a while to get the extra battery and work up the ambition to make the transition. Unit arrived promptly and intact and the installation instructions were clear - there's really not much to hooking one up after you master how to put two 12 VDC batteries in series. In my case, I place the batteries in the bow of a small Gheenoe-type boat to balance the weight and splice in a #6 cable to the existing motor wires.Yes, this motor has twice the power of my old 45 lb unit. It really scoots. Pretty quiet for such a strong motor. Control is easy to use. And the unit looks nice in white. Now for my complaints: I was surprised to read one of the label warnings that said "Never put the upper part with handle into water, this item must be dry and cleaned; it must be kept in dry place after use." !! This is astounding news for a trolling motor TO BE USED ON A BOAT! Sure, I understand that immersing the controls in water will cause damage, but seriously? You can't leave it out in the rain? You are supposed to remove it and store it someplace dry and clean? I do hope this is just a case of a zealous corporate lawyer trying to protect against needless claims. In the meantime, I've wrapped the upper part with a plastic bag when it's not in use. I keep the motor mounted on the back of my boat which remains outside tied to my dock. Let's see if that's necessary.Next, the thrust of the motor is far too heavy on the first gear. It seems like 90% of the thrust is in Gear 1 and the other 10% is spread out over the next 7 gears. There is very little change of speed from 2nd through 5th. Because this is the first time I've had any experience with this motor or with any Newport Vessels motor, I cannot tell if this is intended or if there is some circuit connected wrong within my controls. I will pursue this issue with Newport Vessels before I say it is broken. With the light 13-foot fiberglass boat that I have it mounted on, I have to make sure the motor is facing forward before I engage it or the whole back end shoots sideways and puts a serious strain on the mounts.Another interesting tip offered in their warning label: "Particular care should be exercised when using this item near anybody with long hair. Users with long hair should tie it up or wear swimming caps when using this boat." I kid you not.Overall - three stars because it is a strong motor for the price. I just hope the durability is good and would love to fix that jump start issue.

Great motor, as long as you never need to stop.
This motor is very powerful. The motor and 3-blade prop seem to be well built and move a lot of water. It came with the breaker that prevents it from overloading the motor in weeds, which is good because it does hang up on the weeds quite a bit. I have two big complaints about it though. 1. It's lowest setting is too high. In fact, the first three speeds are almost identical in speed. To be fair, an 86lb thrust motor is for a heavier boat so you should expect it would be pretty fast on a small one, so to resolve the issue for a smaller boat, I put a variable switch in between the motor and the battery. 2. Its biggest problem is that the switch on the handle is crap. When unmanned and moored to the dock, it's turned itself on twice, and when in it, sometimes I can't get it to stop... so it's pretty dangerous. I was going to return it, but again, with the switch i've added, I've bypassed the problem and the motor meets my needs as both a trolling motor and a tool to move the silt and water around at my dock.

After two years of use.
Great motor with a lot of power. Needs suitable battery as it requires a lots of ampers. Had to undo the control box unit to properly adjust the power levels on the handle lines vs the "clic" as it was not propely lined up. This is not a show stopper! Also had to reinforce the adjustable transom mount as with 3/4 of its power on, it jumped to the next adjusting level and changed the motor angle. On the long run, could damage the mount assembly and may become a show stopper ! Did the same for my son who purchased the 46 pounds and had same problem.

Lots of thrust, battery lasts about 4 hours, no problems what so ever and have used this for two seasons.

Buen troleador, pero la compañía que utilizaron para la entrega tardo demasiado. Creo que deben poner más atención en las compañías que contratan para este fin
