Stonkraft Collectible Folding Wooden Chess Set with Magnetic Crafted Pieces, 7" X 7"

This is wonderful and I love using it. Do you know that now you can watch great Chess games, openings and tactics online on youtube from all time, including Fischer's games? This set is great for playing along! First, the price is good. Yes you can get plastic pieces cheaper but these are real wood pieces to give you the real chess feel - just a pleasure to your fingers. May as well enjoy playing than that cheap plastic feel. Second, it folds up small to carry along, not pocket size but the wood feel for the board and real wood pieces worth it. Don't settle for sheiss. Third the magnetic pieces hang on strongly, don't fall and scatter around EVER. You can rely on the quality, and a nice thick felt interior with tightly grooved spaces that hugs the pieces snugly. This is not just a chess set, this is a portable chess bookshelf for your desktop, lap, bookcase or carry on shoulder bag. I am so happy I did not get the plastic ones, no fun.If you want something to carry in your pocket for a commute, and don't carry a laptop or shoulder bag, then consider the one that is perfectly flat, foldable to wallet size with round magnetic icons. It's super cheap and looks really convenient.

Very nice, I'm pleased with the quality and it's perfect size for my day trip bag. Looking forward to my next trip, maybe I won't wait.After seeing other reviews I was concerned with three things:1) the workmanship and quality control of the men. Some reviews showed pictures of the dark pieces being inconsistent & with some damage. I considered this and figured I would stain them again if necessary ... their fine!2) the board not fully opening due to the hinges and/or the latch... okay on a hard table that's still an issue. But on just a cloth bag or napkin it's really not an issue. Also, this one was upgraded with a magnetic closure. Very nice.3) the pieces magnets... Well all stay on the board when turned sideway... but the kings and one pawn did slide a bit. The magnets are not super but work good enough.

I got this for my son. He wanted a travel-size board. Some of the previous reviews made me nervous, but this is a quality set. I included photos to give a better idea of what the board & pieces are like.Hinges are just fine. Wood is so nice, I will be looking for a velvet bag to keep it in. Pieces are secure inside, so if it's opened upside down, they don't fall out. Carved pieces have simple designs (ex: knight). Magnets work great! See for yourself...

Ever wanted to play travel chess but are kind of icked out by little plastic pieces? We felt we would enjoy quick games on the road a little more with a wooden set, and this rather cute little set caught our attention.This same item seems to be sold under a great variety of brands and by several different sellers, the one we bought was under Stonkraft.We're very ambivalent about this, because it's such a cute, neat little design, but the execution of it certainly seems to suggest it is indeed hand made but not necessarily controlled for quality at all.The good: the little board is magnificent. Beautiful wood, the inlay is smooth and seems solid, and it's just a very pleasant board to play on. We did not have the problem with the clasps other reviewers have noted, because they seem to have switched from the metal button clasp to hidden magnetic clasps, which makes for a very smooth close without a lot of fuss. Ours did not lay completely flat: either the metal hinges or the cloth hinges that cover them on the inside are slightly misaligned. But it sticks up only just a little, not enough to be distracting. I do wish it opened entirely flat, though. And the foam in the back, while cut out nicely to fit the pieces in for storage, looks like it will age poorly (little bits in the more complicated cutouts, e.g. the knights' slots, are already flaking after light use.Ah, but the pieces. Please see the photos I've attached. Many of them had physical defects, like little chunks -- very cheaply made and clearly there's no quality control at all. The stain on both white and black pieces is highly variable (see picture) -- so much so that a couple of the black pieces are close to the same color as the white pieces, and pieces aren't the same color top to bottom. These seem to have been hand-stained without a lot of attention to consistency of coverage. And the magnets on a couple of them are not well fixed -- while all of the pieces in our set do stick when you hold the board upside down, if you move it roughly or jostle it (as in a moving car when it hits a bump in the road) the weaker pieces fall over. And because the polarity and strength of the magnets is inconsistent, some pieces tend to attract one another when moved (since the squares are close together).We can't say we recommend this set, until they get the quality control worked out. It is very pleasing to play with wooden pieces and this is in that category where we considered returning it but decided to give it a chance. In retrospect, the defects in the playing pieces aren't made up for by the excellent little board, and we probably would have returned it if our return window hadn't expired.Can't give this a one star review because it's half of a great, unique little set -- the board, although with flaws. We might try to find some mundane plastic magnetic pieces of similar size to try on the board, which may defeat the purpose of having an all wood set but would at least make the purchase salvageable.A note as an aside: this set hasn't solved the fundamental flaw of most travel chess sets -- where do you put captured pieces? On this set, if you want to lift it up carefully and stash them in the foam inserts, as long as those last, there's a partial solution. But that's just too cumbersome for normal play, particularly if you're trying to play in the car. You cannot, we discovered, try to line them up on the edge of the board off the squares -- they just get attracted to the closest square or start to clump up when the magnets of two or more captured pieces collide. The easy solution to this is to include a small cloth bag for the set that can double as temporary storage for captured pieces, which I would suggest to any maker.

Kids and I take this everywhere and it's helped them become excited about chess

The product description said that the king piece is 1.75 inches. It's actually 1.25 inches. All the pieces are too small, so that it is hard to move the pieces and it's hard to distinguish the bishops from the pawns.

Very nice product, ideal for gift, and traveling. The size is optimal for a trip and pieces are nice and made of wood.

Impressed on the quality for the price. Just the right size to my boy to bring to school and play with his friends.

Das Brett ist überraschend klein, hat aber für Reisen die meiner Meinung nach ideale Größe.Dieses hier ist die Größe M, also ca. 18x18cm im ausgeklappten Zustand. Noch kleiner (ca. 12x12cm) würde ich es nicht nehmen, die nächste Größe (ca. 26x26cm) kann man überlegen. Mir persönlich wäre die L Größe für Reisen und ZB am Strand zu groß.Nun zu hiesiger Version M:Sehr schön verarbeitet, überraschend hochwertig, viel mehr als ich mir erwartet hatte. Das Brett ist fein und genau verarbeitet, ich habe absolut nichts zu bemängeln. Die Figuren sind überraschend fein und detailliert verarbeitet, sie sind real definitiv schöner als auf den Bildern.Die Magnete halten alle anstandslos, ein oder zweimal ist der Filz an der Unterseite der Figuren nicht ganz genau geklebt, aber da kann man ganz leicht selbst nacharbeiten.Für den Strand fast schon zu schade, aber wenn man mit nassen Handtüchern aufpasst, geht das schon. Alles in Allem, sehr sehr schönes Reiseschach, bei uns hat es sich definitiv bewährt.

Great chess set. Very small as I wanted. The box is made of a quite solid wood piece (surprisingly heavy). It has a distinct smell of wood, not bad though. The pieces are well made and detailed despite the small size. All pieces fit nicely in the box interior, it holds them firmly. The magnets are not super strong, but they are good enough to keep the pieces in place. The box closes nicely and it feels solid. The pieces are small but they are still playable and the board fits anywhere. We played on the couch on top of a pillow placed between us. I loved it!
