Defining an abstract concept
Bernard Waber looks at people engaged in seemingly dangerous activity--such as trapeze artists, firefighters, or astronauts who obviously need courage. Then he makes it clear that people who face the ordinary trials of life need courage too. By illustrating the importance of courage in diverse circumstances, he identifies a tie between them.In addition to the story featured on the cover (jumping off a diving board), activities highlight scary prospects every child faces--such as riding a bike without training wheels. Other concepts include doing what you have to do when you're not good at it (stepping to the plate in a baseball game), eating food you dislike, not acting jealous when you feel it inside--you get the idea. A child or a dog illustrate most scenes and a simple sentence identify problems.I feel this book could be problematic for very young children who do not yet handle abstract concepts. But because the book defines courage through meaningful everyday examples, it does encourage children to think or evaluate emotions--even when they are hard to define. And so, Courage is a good book to have on the shelf--to read occasionally. One never knows, someday, in a tight spot when faced by a crisis, recalling the meaning and value of courage could be helpful.

Great book to talk about big and little courage
My 7 year-old son has a heart defect and has had 8 surgeries to date. His speech therapist read this to him and I had to get a copy. A beautiful book talking about how, no matter how big your courage is, you are a hero!

A delightful springboard of a book to discuss what courage means
My granddaughter is starting third grade in a new school this year. I bought this book to encourage and inspire her to be courageous as she faces this new challenge. The whimsical drawings are a joy with just the right touch of pathos and humor. The captions with each picture are just enough to encourage more discussion. A wide array of situations where courage is encouraged is provided and the book works as well for boys as it does for girls. This is one of those " children's books" that would also make a thoughtful gift to an adult facing a challenging situation.

A little cleanup would have been nice
My order was shipped promptly and I was glad that I'd read the reviews. The book is perfect for my 8 yr old grandson to read to his younger brothers. I'm sure he'll enjoy it and learn about courage as the author addresses the many different kinds of courage we have in life, not only the typical fireman saving the victim from the burning house. My only criticism is that the book could have been cleaned up a little better. But for the price, it was a good deal.

Teaching Courage
I bought this book for my 4 year old grandson. He enjoys it very much, and requests it often at bedtime. The vocabulary and lessons in the book are now a part of his life: I have heard his father remind him: "Remember to use your Courage," And last summer as he was about to jump in the pool, I heard him say, "I've got to use my Courage!" I can't wait until he is able to read it to his little brother. I just bought a copy for my granddaughter. She is already a brave girl at 2, but everyone needs to develop the skill of COURAGE, even this grandmother.

Great concept and execution, but content didn't live up to my expectations
There are so many great lines and concepts in this book, but ultimately a small minority of them were deal breakers for our family, particularly 2 pages with language that undermined what we've taught our kids about secrets and safety. There are also a couple of things that, despite fully accepting the premise of courage in the mundane, I found oddly unhealthy. For instance, "hiding" jealousy vs talking about it to get help or framing angry acceptance as courage. I understand that not all families will think the same way and will have unique needs; for us this one just wasn't a great fit. I appreciate the concept and will definitely try to incorporate the spirit of what it teaches into our family vernacular.

Excellent book!
My husband and I first bought this book over 15-years ago for our daughter - before she was born. It's our favorite. We both use it in our classrooms. He teaches high school English and I teach Child Development. Quality children's poetry. Fantastic pictures. Just get it. You won't regret your purchase.

個人的には26、27ページの「Courage is exploring heights--and depth. Courage is a blade of grass breaking through the icy snow.」が好きだ。最後のページはなるほどね!と思わせるんだけど、それは読んでのお楽しみ。とてもいい本でした。買って損はしませんね。

Courage ≠
