Well Researched, But a Rough Read
I was looking forward to reading this book, but the price put me off from buying it for a while. Long passages of the book read more like a roster or a recitation of Tibetan monastic personages. There is little in the way of a description of events linked to the discovery and dissemination of the 'Tibetan Book of the Dead,' nor of how it has developed over time. A reader will find him or herself reading name after name of figures in the associated doctrinal lineages, some of which are very obscure. The author's style includes a lot of self references (e.g. "I believe...," "I think that...," and other similar phrasing). Just a question of style, but it started to grate on me. If you're interested in the topic, it is a starting point; but it is a grind to read.
