A very personal hard sci-fi story
Good science fiction isn’t about the science so much as it is about how scientific changes affect individuals and society. So what happens when you have young kids in love separated by increasingly greater distances, where messages go from being delivered in minutes to being delivered in years? And what happens when relativistic speeds are taken into consideration, and aging happens at starkly different rates?Something that caught my attention was how the characters displayed a stunted, idealized view of love because of their circumstances. Not an unbelievable one, though, but instead one that would likely happen. My only complaint about the story was that I wish there had been a little more development and digging into the characters, their letters, and their psychology, but given the specific focus of the story, I can understand why it wasn’t there. And in fact, a lot was revealed in very few words, as much by what was said as by what wasn’t.I’m glad I picked up this story. I haven’t seen the movie, so this is a stand-alone for me. But after reading this, I think I might have to find the original film!

A star crossed mess.
This is rough. Seems quite a few people here are really quite fond of this book and that's cool I guess. Im just really scratching my head over this one. This book takes Shinkai's story, stretches it, waters it down, and ultimately manages to totally misplace the emotional and narrative weight of the movie's story in superfluous characters and plot elements, distractingly unpolished art work(namely the inhumanly lanky character designs and a seeming inability to render mecha) and most egregiously an ending that bewilderingly discards the created world's pre established rules and the stories ENTIRE POINT IN BEING to deliver a totally incoherent, artificially poignant, and contrived ending that renders the whole book pretty much pointless and self contradictory. Really sucks, man.I don't know. I liked how many times there were panels featuring nothing but shots of the sky. That was smart and pretty. The landscapes\settings looked okay I guess.I don't know. Maybe if I was 13 and hadn't seen the movie(which I adore). And didn't notice it's glaring faults. Maybe I could enjoy the story, which despite being mangled is still, at least conceptually, really unique and compelling even in 2020, though maybe less so now that phones are just tiny computers.

I read this book when I was smaller and forgot all about it until a while ago. Found it on amazon for a good price and just had to buy it!

an amazing idea with average execution
I'm unfamiliar with the film, so i can only judge this story by the manga here. And the manga is just average. It has good (moments of drama and spectacle with good dialouge) and it has bad (interchangeable faces, poor pacing that doesnt represent the time elapsing, and an unsatifying ending).I want to stress that average isnt bad, and i did overall enjoy this. Obviously the mangaka put a lot of work into this and they should be comended. However not pointing out the flaws would be dishonest. If youre a fan of the movie then you'll assuredly have a different experience for better or worse. Maybe these problems are present even in that i dont know. Either way there's an amazing story trying to get out, maybe an extra 20 or 30 pages to help the pacing would have helped, maybe spending more time on the art, i dont know.Overall i'd say if you really want it it's worth a pick up, but dont expect anything absolutly spectacular

Beautiful, yet bittersweet
This was the second Makoto Shinkai work I've read and it's probably my favorite so far. I prefer solid happy endings, and the ending suggested made me happy because it gave me hope.

Beautiful and sparse.
I think my title says it all. But this is just beautifully written, even in the empty spaces. One of my favorites.

Bravo! a rather marvelous story
Qualifying it as five stars considering the pace and deep ronantic style to guide the story seen by my old 16 :)
