The Toy & Miniature Poodle (Terra-Nova)

Comprehensive resource
I have a 4.5 year old Chocolate Miniature Poodle which I rescued this past Thanksgiving. Although I owned a white toy poodle before and thought I was familiar with them, I realized there was a lot that I didn't know (and was doing a hack job before). This book is a very comprehensive and well-written resource. It provides historical information including breed standards, drills into their unique characteristics, and provides all the practical information not only in preparing and getting a poodle, but more importantly for me, how to feed, groom, train, and medically treat. The health section is a fairly thorough listing including health checks and ailments - which I particularly appreciated after spending many visits at the vet trying to identify my dog's source of incontinence and testing for UTI, Kidney stones, overdrinking, Leptospirosis and ruling out Diabetes Mellitus. (She just got treated for Leptospirosis).I recommend this book to owners of toy and miniature poodles. I especially appreciate the grooming section which provides clear, detailed advice on the many grooming requirements of poodles and a helpful clipper blade chart. Since purchasing this book and supplementing it with youtube videos, I've purchased clippers and have been able to do a fair job. The book is able to provide information better than my vets and other videos on how to clip my dog's black nails (clip a little at a time and watch for a dark spot and also note how the top grows faster and curves around), on brushing teeth (dogs don't like having their lips pulled back to reach the back teeth, so brush under lip for back and worry about the outside of the teeth only), etc... My dog has been eating grass and in the winter ate frozen dog feces (coprophagia), all of which the writer explains in her book. Despite my multiple trips to the vet and my list of questions that I always pose there, this book does a far better job of explaining my dog to me and makes me a more confident mom.The book has lots of color photos and side notes that reinforce and illustrate the text. The format is easy to read and I recommend reading it cover to cover and then referring to it as needed. The DVD shows a few helpful tutorials on how to train your dog for basic commands with readily administered treat tidbits.

You'll like it better if you haven't already been reading around a great deal.
If this is the first book about miniature poodles that you read, you will probably think it's great. Between the time I ordered it and the time it arrived, I did a lot of reading online, and by the time this book showed up I had already read most of what it contains. If you come to it after reading around on The Poodle Forum and watching You Tubes about how to groom and trim nails, you will be less impressed than if you pick this up first. There is a great deal of useful information about how to find the right dog. But a lot of the information is generic, and applicable to any breed. Also as in joys books of this kind, some of the information is presented as gospel. For example, the author talks about the benefits of early spay neither. He has a great deal of company here, but it is worth noting that early spay neuter may well not be in the best interest of the dog's long term health. I guess relying on any one source is inadvisable. One needs to read around. The inclusion of the DVD was a plus. Without it I might have given two stars.

Really good and informative but maybe wanted a bit more at the end.
This book started out great.I love her history of the poodle and why its such a fabulous dog. The first several chapters were really useful and I learned a lot. But by the end it felt like a book about everything that could go wrong with your dog. It ended on a depressing note.I definitely would buy this again, but, I think ending on a happier note would have been nice. Instead of ending talking about dog cancer and doggy first aid. I know those things are important but I could easily buy a book on small dog first aid, and health issues.I guess I was expecting a little bit more of a "Yay you're getting a poodle" kind of book. But overall, I really loved it. It was well-rounded, and informative. Great read!

I had to have my best friend of 11 yearsput to sleep
August 29th of this year, I had to have my best friend of 11 yearsput to sleep. I have been the parent to several poodles over the course of my life, but I never had a book on them. Before ai get a new per, I thought I would get book to learn more sbout them. Thid book while not very big thick book does covet all the areas that you need to know about poodles. It does not reallygo into deep detail inany area, but doescover the important points to owning poodle. So great book to own if you own, or are thinking of getting your first poodle

Well written, organized, and comprehensive
This is my first experience with the Terra Nova series, but I was duly impressed. A good TOC and index can be used to find whatever you want, and the relatively comprehensive information provides the reader with just about everything you need to know about your pet. If it's not in this book, you probably need specialized help from your vet. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in learning more about their poodle in order to understand them better. The poodle is a very interesting, intelligent dog and this book helps the owner know what to expect. The book's organization allows the owner to use it for reference as well.

A must read for poodle owner's!
This book gave a detailed look at the health and care of poodles of all sizes. I found it informative on the cost of grooming and the different styles favored by poodle owner's. It gave an informative description of the many products poodles need, and the type of care an owner should expect when purchasing or owning a poodle. Please read this book if you have any questions about a poodles care and or health problems one may develope.

Very educational!
This book covers all the basics you need to know before and after you buy your toy poodle . It helped me understand their behavior especially how I needed to make sure to teach how I was the Alpha and not my toy poodle. She is not super trained, just the basics and she does perfect! This book is great!

Delighted
Bought this for my Daughters Birthday for her to read up about her recently acquired Toy Poodle. She loves the book and its informative text, though not as much as she loves the poodle obviously,!!!
