Whiteside Router Bits 6402 Steel Router Collet with 3/8-Inch Inside Diameter and 1/2-Inch Outside Diameter

I have two different collets from two different manufacturers...one holds 1/4" bits; the other is this one and holds 3/8" bits. The 1/4" Makita collet has three silts - one is cut all the way through and the two others are cut almost all the way through. When you tighter the outer 1/2" collet, the almost-all-the-way-through slits act like hinge points and allow the adapter to clamp down on the inner bit. That particular design is very sensitive to the shaft size of the 1/4"bit. If the shaft is exactly the same diameter as the hole, it works well. If the shaft is even a few ten thousandths smaller, the force is concentrated in a line midway between the slits instead of being equally distributed around the entire shaft. As a result, it doesn't grip nearly as tightly as it should.The Whiteside collet adapter uses a different approach. From both the top and bottom, through slits are cut most of the length of the adapter. The result is a set of interlocking fingers that run most of the length of the collet. When the outer 1/2" collet is tightened, the fingers press against the shaft for their entire length. It distributes the force well and can better accommodate slight variations in bit shank size. It works extremely well. The picture is NOT the Whiteside collet; rather it's the Makita three slit design.

I needed this to make the center cutting router bits able to work in my WEN Plunge Router . Other wise you get these small round spots where the Router bit went in and did not cut center

Well balanced bit adapter. I used this to put a 3/8 inch spiral upcut bit (RU4125) in my router that only has 1/4 and 1/2 collets. It worked perfectly and there was no vibration. It's also cheaper to buy this and the bit than to get the 3/8 inch bit that steps up to 1/2 (RU4900)

This works as an insert to the 1/2 collet. Simply slips in and allows you to use a 3/8ths shaft. Works perfect for my Makita router and the upcut spiral bit!
