Bafta-winning TV adaptation of the classic children's novel by Clive King. Barney (Thomas Sangster) is a shy ten-year-old who's spending the summer holidays with his grandparents. One day, while out walking, he is chased by the village bullies and tumbles down an overgrown quarry. There, on the quarry floor, he encounters an apparently humanoid figure with thick shaggy hair and two bright eyes. This creature turns out to be Stig (Robert Tannion), a caveman who is hundreds of thousands of years old. Gradually he and Barney learn to communicate with other. Together they forage through the rubbish dump at the bottom of the quarry, using the things the villagers throw away to improve Stig's cave. So begins a very special friendship, and a tale which has charmed children and adults alike ever since it was first published in 1963.

Well-produced DVD, recommended
My kids aged 12 and 9 loved this DVD, having been read the book by me a few years ago (it being a childhood favourite of my own). The DVD is a good fit for the written story and brings it into the more modern era (well, 2002) with realistic behaviour of the Snargetts and co. The actor who played Stig was great, with some good comedy moments now and then, and good drama in the final episode. We all particularly liked the way the ending of the story was put together and filmed, which added extra understanding to what we recalled from the book's ending. Highly recommended for late-primary-school-age children and their parents who read the book at their age. (PS we all groaned at the grandad (Geoffrey Palmer) and grandma's canoodle mid-series! )

A Smile Spreads Across my Face
Stig of the Dump was one of my favorite books I read when I was about 12 -To get a DVD of the television series bought back very happy memories, and Stig & Barney are amazing characters. One cannot be disappointed by this DVD set. I sat engrossed in the DVD and watched the whole series in 1 sitting.

Lovely story well told
Whole family loved this series! So engaging we ended up watching all six episodes back to back on a rainy day. Would happily watch again and again. I loved the book as a child in the 70s and now my own family has fallen for Stig and Barney. I would suggest suitable for 7+ as Stig could be a bit scary for younger ones and there are older boys bullying Barney. Great cast.

Be aware
Be aware, this is actually a PG rather than a U despite what it says on the picture. Had a very disappointed class of 7-8 year olds who had been looking forward to watching this at the end of their English unit on the book

Clive King's book (Stig of the dump) come alive
I had read the book by Clive King and wondered what the TV series was like. I wasn't disappointed it mainly stuck to the book and was very entertaining. The ending rounded it off nicely too.
