Yes. Turn dial to diode setting and press FUNC once. Beep is plenty loud. Great meter for the price.

For a hobbyist, why would I not buy a $20 multimeter vs something $100+

Fora hobbyist the really cheap meters are the best because sooner or later one will test something that will ruin the meter. This meter is really an intermediate meter which is above the hobbyist stage but still below the professional stage. An no, buying a Krug doesn't make you a professional.

What batteries does it use

9v battery. It does come with it. You will have to install.
