Heavy duty but not for heavy octodome softboxes
I purchased this for a 70" octodome softbox that is too heavy to be placed on the end of my light head. Most speedrings come with 8 holes around the edge for the Octodome rods and 1 to 2 extra threaded holes so you are able to mount this to a heavy duty light stand (via a Manfroto 026 lightstand Part) instead of putting all the weight on my light. This speedring only has the 8 holes. There is no way to drill another hole either due to the design of the speedring. Since it is universal I will be using this for my medium softbox but was useless for what I purchased it for. Quality wise this is very durable. Seems like it will last if you are using a small octodome or any softbox you should be fine.

good item but seller did not pack with padding at all
This is a very good solid piece of metal (but the knobs are fragile plastic); but the seller did not put an ounce of packing they sent it in and one of the knobs was cracked into three pieces. I contacted the seller and they responded (quickly) and asked me for a picture of the damaged part. I emailed them a jpeg of the damaged part but they have not responded yet (as of 08/23 2012). There was no padding at all protecting the speed ring. Upon opening the plastic see-through bag it was in I discovered one of the plastic knobs was cracked into three pieces. I did not find the third piece in the sealed box and plastic bag so it makes me wonder if the seller sent me a returned item (to them) which was already damaged before being sent to me..total price including shipping for me was $31.93. Note to Fotodiox: Use packing materials. Will probably Not Order from this vendor again until their packing improves in the future. $16 plus for shipping Only? -they Can afford padding in packing!

Works surprisingly well!
I bought these to use as temporary speedrings because the specific speedrings for my monolights backordered. I have been impressed with how well they work, I have used them to attach a 70" octagon softbox and have had no trouble. The only thing that kept them from getting a five star review is that the protective rubber ends of the screw clamps keep falling off. A little super glue will fix this.

Very happy with my purchase
Very happy with my purchase! I use it with the Neewer 300w Strobe/Flash Light for Studio (model c-300). Seems to hold well... not too heavy and easy to mount my Neewer softbox. I used it to replace the Bowen's Mount that came with the soft box because the Bowen's mount didn't fit the Strobe I had purchased. Both were same diameter. This Speedring corrected the problem. It easily clamps on the Strobe and doesn't wobble or slip off. Good solution to my problem and now everything works as planned!

Requires some directions
Before loosening the rotation knob be careful. The casting has a hexagonal forging and one may make the assumption that the thumb screw screws into a hexagonal nut that seats into the hexagonal forging. However the thumb screws into a tapped hole which tightens and loosens to allow the softbox or octobox to rotate. The plastic tabs don't seem to be well seated. They may compress well when tightened.

Had to make major modifications to make it work
I ordered a Fotodiox 48" octagon Softbox and was going to return it because it didn't fit the flash. Then I saw this universal speed ring and ordered it. It didn't fit the rods from the softbox, but instead of returning both items, I bolted the outer ring of original speed ring to universal speed ring and now it works great.

Does what it's supposed to
It does as advertised, though the "universal" nature of it does take away from having a really secure fit. It holds my 24"x24" soft box decently well. I don't know if it would hold up to someone grabbing it and pulling at it, but that should never happen anyway.

It will Do The Job
It is bulky and the rubber keeps falling off the metal ends and it is a hell of a struggle gettig a softbox attached, but it will get the job done. If you have a no name brand strobes and dont know the size for a speed ring then I will recommend this one.
