As You Do: Adventures with Evel, Oliver, and the Vice President of Botswana . . .

From the first entry, "The Hamster"'s narrated accounts of his adventures, both with the Top Gear crew and solo, were witty, honest, humorous, and riveting. I thoroughly enjoyed this window into the real world of Richard Hammond. From dog-sledding in the North Pole to driving across Africa he has accomplished so much. Of all of the amazing experiences detailed in this book the one I found most inspirational was Richard's journey home for his daughter's birthday. His account of that experience was the final push that got me into running! A great book for petrol-heads, adventure nuts and Anglophiles alike.

Highly entertaining books. You can just imagine Richard Hammond sitting beside you reading the book out loud. I've watched Top Gear for many years and enjoyed the badinage between The three presenters. Richard more than holds his own. After reading the section on Evel Kneivel, I've decided to see if I can track down that documentary.The Kindle version has excellent formatting, a rarity in ebooks. I was very disappointed to discover that the ebook has none of the photographs that are included in the printed version; what could they have been thinking? I subtracted one star for that.

As You Do is a lively read. What does the average person do after surviving a horrific accident and recovering from Traumatic Brain Injury? If you're Richard Hammond, you clearly embrace what happens next. What happens are a series of adventures over a year that most would consider crazy if only one of those things happened. It is told in a casual, freewheeling style that hardly reads as a memoir, with moments that are touching, awe-inspiring, and sometimes Laugh Out Loud funny. Highly recommended even if you know nothing about Hammond or Top Gear.

I am a huge fan of Top Gear, so I was looking forward to reading more of the 'behind the scenes' stuff that goes into making the episodes for the guys. This book did not disappoint! If you are a fan of the show and want to learn more about what goes on, I would recommend this highly. If you are not a fan of the show, it is still a great read. The stories are well told and very enjoyable.

While we're used to Richard Hammond's spunk and charm on the hit TV show Top Gear, seeing it in writing brings it to a whole new level. In addition to the usual clever quips and fantastic stories, this book truly shines because of Hammond's ability to use formal, descriptive (and sometimes, quite colorful) language to convey an informal and very personal relationship with the reader. "As You Do" is a wonderful book for both Top Gear fanatics and anyone looking for a genuinely good read.

I enjoyed the book but I'm a top gear fan. I think if you're not a fan of the show its a pretty mediocre book. The language used is pretty basic. Nothing great about it nothing bad about it.

....and if you have never seen Top Gear, then you are culturally stunted. I'm a huge fan of the show, so a book by Hammond that lifted the curtain a bit on the production side greatly interested me. Hammond's writing style describes the traveling insanity that is a Top Gear film shoot. I won't give 5 stars because that would be too fanboy-ish. Pick this up and re-watch the Polar and Botswana specials with new appreciation.

A long time fan of Top Gear I bought this book along with "On the Edge" to get a better sense of just who I was watching on the television screen. Mr. Hammond takes a very open and honest approach in his writing, although some of his descriptions can be a bit over the top. His book is somewhat tongue-in-cheek as it is abundantly clear there is no such thing as a typical day in his world. Mr. Hammond seems to not take himself too seriously (he often draws the short straw) and it is his humorous take on all of the mishaps and adventures he partakes that makes this a joyous read.

While the audiobook is indeed good the description does not mention that this is an abridged recording originally reduced to fit on 3 CDs. I ended up buying the Kindle version to read the missing bits.

As a fan of Top Gear I was looking forward to reading lots of behind the scenes titbits. The book delivered on the trip to Botswana and the Arctic Challenge. Lots of amusing anecdotes and a real feel of being there. Also really enjoyed the chapter about Hammond running home through the floods for his daughters birthday. Where the book ran out of steam was the chapter about Evil Kenievel. Fans of Top Gear and The Hamster - enjoy!

Easiest way of putting it is this book doesn’t hold up well in 2020. I know that’s to be expected, but these days Hammond is a different person and it’s therefore difficult to get into his old stories

Hamster regales us of tales from his epic slog to the magnetic north pole... After reading the book I knew how he felt. Some say it could of been funnier...

Really enjoyed this book! After watching the top gear specials, was very interesting to get the inside track from Richard Hammond. Some of the stories are just amazing, and if you can switch to his subtle sense of humour, very amusing. More of the same Richard!

I enjoyed reading this book and could imagine Richard Hammond telling the stories and making them funny as I turned the pages. Definitely a must read if your a fan of top gear.
