Great grinder
There are only 2 high-end pepper mills a home cook needs to consider. They are the Unicorn Magnum and the Peugeot Paris U'Select. In short, the Magnum is perfect for any home cook. You only need the U'Select if you routinely prefer its select-a-grind or design. They're both lovely, and will make you very happy. Features of the Unicorn Magnum: Made of black plastic. It looks great in any kitchen. It will survive lots of casual abuse. Just don't smack it hard on tile or granite, and it will hold up a long time. Holds a boatload of peppercorns. Most mills have a ~1" wide channel to hold peppercorns. In the Magnum, the whole outer casing is hollow. This is maximum storage. Gigantic grind. The 9/inch Magnum has a gigantic metal burr, meaning you can feed any number of people quickly even if you want a fine grind. Easy to adjust. Turn the adjuster screw on the bottom, try a test grind, repeat until you have a setting you like. You'll eventually learn partial adjustments if you need to change. There's no indicator of where you're stopped, so you always have to do a test grind to check where you left of - if you change. When you select one grind all the time (coarse for cooking) you never have to worry. Easily loads using the side hole. Some people claim it's easy to spill all the peppercorns. This shouldn't be an issue. Hold the grinder on the bottom and the twist top, and you'll never have an issue. Features of the Peugeot U'Select: Made of stained, polished wood. The Peugeot is gorgeous. It has a classic look that goes with most kitchens. Select-a-grind. Has labels from a fine grind to coarse. The coarse grind is perfect for grilling and most cooking. The finer grinds are better for eggs and so on - I find a setting of 3 is about right for omelettes. The only problem with the dial is that the fine grind doesn't go to a total powder. I've found for some applications - such as cocktails - I could use one step finer than the dial goes by default. But for most cooking, the dial in fine. The dial is sensitive. You're supposed to use the dial only for changing grinds. I had the misfortune of using the dial all the time while I was grinding until I cracked it. That's my bad, and I retired the Peugeot to my downstairs bar. I'll try to fiddle with the selection to make it a little finer. On the finest grinds, the Peugeot does have a smaller burr, meaning it can take quite a while to make an amount of pepper. If you're like me maybe you just love the gorgeous carved pepper mill, but other people might find it a bother. Overall: If you only need one grind on a regular basis, the Magnum is the best thing out there. Set it and forget it. The large capacity, easy loading, and minimalist looks are perfect for anyone. The Peugeot is a little more fiddly, with a lower capacity and classic looks, but it has the grind selection. Personally, I think I'm moving to Peugeot exclusively. 95% of the time I'm using a coarse grind for cooking. I have a separate grinder at the table for finishing meals, so I no longer need the U'Select. Even if I need a specific grind, I have a mortar and pestle. The Peugeot is lovely, but the Magnum is for me.

Easy to refill! And grinds a lot of pepper quickly.
This is my favorite pepper grinder. I saw it on Alison Roman's cooking videos, and decided to splurge, even though I already had a very nice Peugeot grinder. I still use that pretty wooden one for my dinner table, but this Unicorn one stays right next to the stove. I bought one for my daughter for Christmas, and she LOVES it. She did mention that, because of this fabulous grinder, she has to buy pepper more often due to using so much more of it :) I actually bought this mill as a gift for a podcaster I love to listen to who has mentioned many times that she loves black pepper (great podcast BTW--it's called Were You Raised By Wolves? and is truly a delight. Highly recommend.) Here are the two main reasons I love the Unicorn pepper mill: It is far easier to refill than the Peugeot. There's a large hole in the side of the grinder with a rotating cover that twists over it to close it off or open it up for refilling. Most pepper mills, you take the top off and try to pour peppercorns down the central hole that runs through the length of the mill, but this is also the hole containing the grinding mechanism and the post that runs down the center, so it's hard to get the pepper into this opening. With the Unicorn, this isn't an issue. I find that the best way to refill it is to put the pepper into a measuring cup with a spout and just pour the pepper into the hole. I do this over a rimmed sheet pan to catch any strays. It grinds A LOT of pepper easily, which is why my daughter noticed she was going through pepper faster than before. It makes swift and easy work of adding a tablespoon of pepper to a recipe (but I mean--who measures pepper? Pepper should be measured with your heart.) If you are a true pepper lover, treat yourself and get this mill.

One outstanding pepper grinder for those that love lots of fresh ground pepper!
This is an outstanding pepper grinder! I did my research and read all of the various reviews and ultimately picked this pepper grinder. Wow, this was exactly what I was looking for. It has huge capacity, and with a small turn it releases a lot of freshly ground pepper. You can adjust the size of the ground pepper and be confident that the grinder effortlessly pours the pepper onto your salad or dinner. If you are like me I really appreciate it when someone gets close to the perfect product for something you love, this is one of those products. Every time I grind the pepper I just love to show others how well it works... PROS: - Fast and effortless pepper grinding. Takes very little effort to mill the pepper. - Huge capacity...really, huge. I love fresh ground pepper and hate constantly refilling the pepper mill. This one has great capacity. - Adjustable grind to vary the size. - Feels durable and well made. - The opening is large so I find it easy to refill with pepper. CONS: - Where's the salt mill? Really, I love this pepper mill so much I want a matching salt mill to set side-by-side with it. The capacity is great I just need two black mills, one for pepper and one for salt. - Mid 2024 commentsโฆ.WHEREโS THE SALT MILL! Update 12-1-2017 - Man, I still love this pepper grinder. I love the huge capacity of this pepper grinder and the ability to adjust the grind size. Really, really need to make one for salt with the same capacity and grinder adjustments. Update 7-2024, this pepper mill is still going strong. I still love it. Iโve searched for a high quality salt mill and it doesnโt exist. Everything appears to be cheap junk. PLEASE make a companion salt mill with the same quality. Iโll gladly pay more for a matching set.

Expensive but simple and great!
I love the simple yet elegant design! It can be a little difficult knowing when to refill since itโs opaque, but I understand how it opposes the sleek look. The grinder is made out of a thick plastic, which I wish werenโt the case as it is $70. Either way, the grinder had a good amount of weight to it, with and without peppercorns in it. Possibly having it made out of metal would make it too heavy? The design is simple. Move the mid section for the window to put the peppercorns, twist the top to initiate the grinding, and twist the screw in the bottom to adjust the grind size. I love how you get so much out of the grinder from just one twist. In the picture, you can see the grinder at its coarsest grind size (top half of the paper towel) and its smallest grind size (bottom half of the paper towel) and how much is dispensed from just one crank. I personally love the bigger chunks of black pepper, even with the smallest grind, allowing for a good bite in some dishes, but my roommate isnโt a big fan because she doesnโt enjoy spice like that as much. As you can see with my other photo, I bought a new 7oz container of peppercorns to fill the pepper grinder as much as possible. Approximately โ -ยฝ of the container is left. I hope itโs a good visual to see how much peppercorns the grinder can hold. Overall, Iโm a big fan!

best pepper grinder i've ever owned
this grinder replaced an oxo which is now relegated to white pepper duty. the unicorn mills grinds so uniformly unlike its predecessor. i use it on fine most of the time and im super happy with its performance and the amount of pepper that comes out. when you twist it to grind you can just feel that the mechanism is well made and substantial unlike some pepper mills that feel cheap like they're on the edge of breaking all the time. i was debating getting the smaller one but i went with the magnum plus and i think its a great size ergonomically speaking, and its not too big to store on the counter or a shelf. i cant say enough good things about this grinder, highly recommended. it does go out of stock sometimes but just be patient and keep checking, its worth the wait.

Fantastic Peppermill, EXCEPT for one thing...
ANOTHER UPDATE: Yes, three years ago Unicorn did replace the mill and sent me a new one (as recorded below), but my mill just BROKE, and I mean the entire top just crumbled into pieces of plastic in my hands!. We use this mill a lot, but it's not like it gets abused or knocked around. I was always a little cautious about Unicorns all thin plastic construction, and now I know I was wise. It still grinds pepper, even with it's plastic head shattered, so the mechanism works well for sure. I guess I should be happy that I got about five years from two of these units--they do work so well--but I guess like a fine pan or dish, I just expect it to work and work and work... I checked and it only comes with a 1 year warranty, so I'm outta luck getting it replaced I spent some time over the last few months--since the Magnum fell apart--testing and looking at other pepper mills, and I have ended up ordering another Magnum. I love the mill and the company service, and have not found any other mill on the market that grinds a lot of pepper as fast as the Magnum, ideally with wooden or metal construction. I want a mill that will see at least a decade, but that doesn't make you grind and grind and grind and grind and grind and grind and grind all afternoon to get a teaspoon of pepper. So far the Magnum--with it's less than ideal plastic construction and all--is the best, most efficient pepper mill I have experienced. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ UPDATE: Some one commented to me here that Unicorn had changed the design on these mills, so that the door no longer came open when using--and that the company would replace my older mill if I contacted them. So I did contact them, and they exchanged my mill and WOW--the new design is GREAT! The refilling door now NEVER opens when using the mill, and in fact sometimes I have to really put some effort into opening the door when refilling! I love it! This mill is now perfect, and the customer service from the manufacturer--years after purchase--was outstanding! HIGHLY RECOMMEND this pepper mill!! _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ORIGINAL REVIEW: This, as many have also posted here, is probably the best pepper mill I have ever used. It grinds exceptionally well, with a turn or two of the grinder producing plenty of pepper for most uses. When I need 1.5 TBL's for my fried chicken recipe, it takes only 8 seconds and maybe a half dozen turns to make that much pepper. Amazing and wonderful after years of Mickey-Mouse grinders from the middle east that require turning and grinding and more turning to ever get even a pittance of pepper! The only NEGATIVE is that the round sliding door on the side, where you load the peppercorns (which makes loading tons of peppercorns a breeze), will often slide open during usage, and sometimes (when the mill is full), peppercorns will come spilling out everywhere. And does anything go rolling all over the kitchen, making much to clean up, more than peppercorns! Really is a wonderful mill, but you really have to watch that door! This mill requires a harder turn, it has a stiffer grinding action (but unlike the others, you can actually get decent amounts of pepper out of it!), and as careful as I am, I often see that the little round door has slide open. To minimize peppercorns all over the place, I no longer fully fill the mill with peppercorns--I only fill it to below the sliding door; then if the door accidentally slides open, peppercorn spillage is minimized. It still is a good amount of peppercorns in storage though...

Absolutely obliterates peppercorns
Excellent pepper grinder, I bought this primarily for cooking, as I anticipated (correctly) having read several reviews that it is a bit highly powered for seasoning at the table - even a quarter turn gives a shower of evenly ground corns more than enough for most meals. I ordered in the UK and was slightly concerned when I saw it was shipping from the USA as I assumed I would have to pay customs but it arrived via Hermes with no additional charges in just nine days which left me impressed. The grinding mechanism is enormous enabling the cook to pulverise a vast quantity of peppercorns in a very short space of time. Though made of plastic the build quality is extremely solid, I would compare it to a nalgene bottle in that you can tell itโs going to last forever. I have had no problems with the loading window opening, just grab it by the main shaft (said the actress to the bishop) and turn the top clockwise and away you go. Adjustment of grind is easy via a thumbscrew on the base which retains its position well without wandering. Very fine adjustments are possible but a small amount of turning varies the grind quite drastically so it might take you a minute to get it exactly dialled in. The finish does show up fingerprints and grease but I have just given it a wipe down with a tea towel which leaves it clean. All in all I would highly recommend you believe this hype on this pepper grinder if you are seeking a means to season your cooking with maximum efficiency and tactile feedback.

Great purchase
After getting fed up with the cheap, non-refillable grinders from the grocery store, especially grinders that make the pepper too fine and take forever to use I sprang for this. Worth every penny. Grinds fast at any size, holds a ton.
