Interesting Idea. Couldn't get it to work effectively.
I work in a hardware store. We get customers who use PVC to build structures such as chairs, tables, frames...you name it. Most of them don't want to use glue and, in many cases friction fit isn't strong enough. So when I saw these PVC threading tools I thought I'd give them a try. I fully expected them not to be suitable in plumbing applications, as the joints wouldn't be to code in most places. Took them to work. Tried, with a couple of fellow employees, to get them to thread the associated sizes of PVC using a hand drill/driver and clamped down piece of PVC. We were unable to get anything remotely resembling a proper thread. We would have probably had better success if we were able to use our drill press. Due to the design of the removable shafts, you can't really use these tools vertically - the shaft remains loose when inserted into the tool. We could probably modify the shafts to make it possible, but since I'm evaluating the tools as-is, there's no point in doing so for the purpose of this review. So I'm knocking two points off. One for the design in terms of how the shaft fits into the tools and another for the demonstration video accompanying the listing which, at best, could be described as "slightly misleading". Some folks may be able to get these to work for their purposes, so I'm not taking points off based on our inability to do so. I really wanted these to work for us. Big time disappointed that they don't.

High Quality but hard to use on a drill
I have to say I was very impressed with the quality of these tools. The cutting edges are very sharp and the build quality is excellent. I will also say that these are being sold for use on portable drills which I tried and found very difficult to do. The threading tools have tapered edges to make it easier to start your cutting BUT using a portable drill it is very difficult to line things up straight and keep them that way during the threading operation. I would say it would be much easier to use these on a drill press or lathe with your work item securely clamped down to get accurate threads. I wanted to clean up the threads on a 1" PVC cap and pipe and was able to only get the threads cleaned up about half way. The cap has threads that are about 1 inch long. I was only able to get this tool about half way up the threads before it bottomed out, maybe 5 threads. I will say that at $15.99(at time of this review) this is a great deal though and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them, but use on a drill press.

Good PVC pipe threader

This is a good set of tools for cutting inside and outside threads on PVC pipe.
These threading tool are very sharp, and robust and they are large so you must be careful using them. Like all threading tools practice is needed so you can keep the tool and therefore the threads centered and square on the PVC pipe. It takes practice just like any other threading and tap and die use. You need to go slow, as in hand turning slow and apply pressure to get the best results for both inside threads and outside threads, although outside threads seemed easier for me than the inside threads, probably because you can see the tool making them and the technique I mention below, while the inside threads are not visible while being cut so it is harder to keep square and also gauge the pressure you need to apply to keep the tool moving forward so as not to destroy the threads with the follow on cutting surfaces. At this price for 3 different size cutting tools that cut both inside and outside threads this is a good deal if you need or want to make threads in PVC pipe. The threads are fairly shallow compared to commercially threaded PVC so I don't know about the pressure handling capability. If I was going to use these threads under water pressure I would test them first. For drainage pipe without pressure this tool would work great for sure. For building things out of PVC pipe, not for water but for projects, these threading tools would also work great. There is a technique I came up with while practicing threading pipe when I first got these. The hardest part is squaring the tool to the pipe so the threads are not crooked. I installed a second shaft, that came with one of the other sizes of tool, on the inside for making outside threads. See the picture. This gave my eye something to keep centered in the pipe to start and keep the tool straight and centered better and resulted in better threads being cut. Starting with that extra shaft in the center of the pipe and keeping it centered as the threads start to cut made the threads come out much better. It is something you can try. Overall, these are very good at cutting threads on PVC pipe and are very sharp. It will take some practice to get good and consistent at it especially if you have never cut threads before, so plan for that before you try cut the good pipe. If you have experience with a tap and die set, the basics are the same and you should pick this up pretty quick.

Sharp and they work with a little luck.
It is hard to know these as the tool itself is good quality and sharp. It does cut threads, just not like a professional threading machine. When used on a cordless drill, you must use the slowest speed possible and clamp down your pvc pipe in a pipe clamp. This is where its gets tough. Just like threading anything, it is crucial to have the tap and die perfectly aligned. Using a drill, this is next to impossible. It takes some practice to get these to work as designed, but it is possible. They are great for emergencies. Rather than having to run to the hardware store to get a smaller pipe, you can cut down a longer one and thread it. Again, these tools are worth the price and the quality is there. I just can't give them five stars because of the difficulty in achieving a quality thread this way. Not the tools fault, but rather the way these work with out a lathe type cutting machine. Overall, the value is there for emergencies to keep in your toolbox. Just practice on a spare piece before trying this on the one you need to get right.
